it about 1:30 in the afternoon here....i logged on about 6am this morning, checked email, visited tsg, logged out about 7:30....everything was fine

came home about a half hour ago, fired up the computer, logged on, and every personal setting i have is gone....there are a few familiar icons on the desktop, but its the orginial desktop from the original startup when i first turned on the computer several years back...."my documents" has nothing that i've ever saved in it, all my desktop folders are gone, ms is telling me that norton is not monitoring, but norton is telling me that it is.....programs like dreamweaver, and photoshop are still in the "all programs" menu, but all the shortcuts are gone

there is a files and setting transfer icon in the start menu which invites me to bring my "old settings" to my "new computer".....never seen that before

i had to run a search to find the hijack this app....everything is on this laptop, but when i start looking through folders, i'm notified that the folder is hidden and asked if i want to "unhide" it

what in the heck is going on?

here's a hjt log

an update.....everything from outlook express is gone.....all settings, all folder content...

firefox seems to work ok, as does IE...cept i get a popup from Inqwire, and a warning about virusus from winfix in another popup.....

i was dreaming that a system restore would fix this, but i'm dead wrong, huh?

bump

i ran registry repair pro three time in succession....this entry shows up as unused software, but cannot be deleted

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\C6P09AFsHNmd

mean anything to anybody?

my apologies if i seem a little agitated/pushy about this, but i don't know whether to go ahead and start rebuilding my desktop, or run a system restore, or wait and be told that things are as bad as i fear......

my computer has been renamed, and it won't save any new settings i give it when i restart.....reverts to the new name....
EDIT: i should elaborate on this....i found my desktop folder intact, which prompted me to check my user accounts (ok), and then the computer name, which was changed to a string of numbers and letters....i changed it back to the original and rebooted, thinking that would give me back my desktop folder on startup (just a guess....i'm way outta my league here)....but it didn't....same original desktop, with the set of windows that were open when this problem first arrived- top one asks me if i want to connect to a "requested" website or remain offline (very suspicious, since i have a dsl hookup), next one the windows security center, telling me my firewall is still active, but asking me if want to set up updates, and telling me i've no anti-virus programs running (well, DUH....they're all turned off)

as i type this, in firefox, the window prompting me to connect to the requested website again pops up

so.....now....

am i screwed, or what?

Your Hijack This log looks fine. Do you have more than one user account on the computer? It sounds like it may have somehow switched users.

Open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. Copy and paste that list here.

thanks, floorman, for taking a look :) (y) ...amazingly (i must actually be learning something here  ) i thought it was ok, as well....but that only made things more scary for me (so i obviously haven't learned very much  )

only the one user...yesterday....now there's a new one....the original profile is corrupt, i think (after i finally got comfortable in my new, "broken" environment, and started looking around more closely, that seemed to be the only answer..... but isn't xp home supposed to tell me if that happens?).....i ran the "uninstall manager" as you suggested, in both the new and old accounts...they're identical (that may not be a surprise to anyone but me....)

i've put all the old account's documents in the shared folder, and started rebuilding a desktop in the new account....the ms support site has two articles on corrupt profiles....the first fix didn't work (it was supposed to be the "easier" of the two).....the other one....the "official" one according to ms....is to the restore the computer to an earlier date....but i'm not doing that until i back things up

what i still don't understand....what still concerns me......is the why of the corruption...occassionally i get a memory dump due to an ati radeon display driver, which puts startup into a loop, and the machine cycles through the dump to a reboot....could something like that be the cause?

the unistall manager file.....

Who knows why some things happen to Windows? ;)

It sounds like you need to update the drivers for your ATI video card too.

You need to uninstall these old versions of Java:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06

Keep only this one:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

When was the last time you reformated the HD and reinstalled Windows? Over time Windows will become unstable and need to be clean installed again. How much time is a variable depending on the usage of the machine.

I noticed the sipix Sipix StyleCam CAMeleon in your hijack file. If you have the drivers for this camera I sure could use them .I lost my disk and Sipix has gone under I guess.

Sipix StyleCam CAMeleon driver

Thanks
