I was infected by spysheriff i followed advise found on here primarily by running spy sweeper and also deleting a couple things in the registry. My concern is that i took too much out and the only problem I seem to have now is that on my Desktop, all the icons have a background color on them. When I try to adjust via control panel and display, I have options to change the color, but none eliminate it. I'm running windows XP and have the same on another pc in the house, but cant tell why the desktop appears different. Here is the logfile from Hijackthis, which is way too much detail for me to understand, can you help?

* Click here to download smitRem.exe.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • It is a self extracting file.
  • Doubleclick the smitRem.exe and it will extract the files to a smitRem folder on your desktop.
  • Do not do anything with it yet. You will run the RunThis.bat file later in safe mode.

* Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.
  • Install ewido.
  • During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido
  • It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
  • On the left side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start and let it update.
  • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

* Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

* Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

* Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

* Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

* Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop

* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

* Next go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" you should see an entry checked called something like "Security info" or similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the "Delete" button. Click OK then Apply and OK.

* Restart back into Windows normally now.

* Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.
- Save the results from the scan!

well, a little snag.... I got thru the process almost all the way but when running ActiveScan it hung up on me twice . It got thru about 18815 files, identified 1 spyware then just froze. I ended the process and started again, but it froze about the same point.

I will include the hijack results below. My husband is concerned because he thought it would resolve the problem with the desktop, but it hasn't changed :(

What do you mean the desktop hasn't changed? Did you run SmitRem?

What is still wrong with the desktop?

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart your computer.

* Click here to download cleandesktop.exe. Save it to your desktop.

Doubleclick on the cleandesktop.exe file.

It will automatically extract to c:\desktopclean where it needs to be to run and will automatically run the cleandesktop.vbs script.

If it doesn't open then go to c:\desktopclean and double click on the cleandesktop.vbs. Do not run any other file from there please unless asked to do so.

If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning about a malicious script wanting to run. Please allow this script to run. It is not malicious.

If you get a message when you first run it "Can not find script file "blah blah blah" then don't worry just doubleclick the cleandesktop.vbs script again you sometimes get that message when a script blocker blocks the script

It will then kill Explorer. You will lose your taskbar and desktop. It will repair the registry entries returning your normal desktop and context menu functions.

It will restart Explorer.

* If you have other user profiles on this system, each of the other Users on the System needs to be signed in to clean up their desktop and regain the right click.

Have each User sign in and run Other Profiles Regfix.vbs
Open C:\ (Go to Start>Run and type C: Press enter) and Open the c:\desktopclean folder. Double click on Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Explorer will be ended and that user's active desktop registry entries will be repaired. Explorer will be restarted.

To restore the desktop to whatever picture you normally have right click on a blank part of desktop & select properties/desktop & select your prefered picture press apply & then ok to exit and then press F5

You will need to do this step for every user account

* Run Kaspersky online virus scan here.

When the scan is finished, Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from Kaspersky scan

sorry for the delay, was out for awhile. The Kapersky scan is still running. After running cleandesktop under the primary user, the desktop changed to all blue, with the icon descriptions as just words, however, when changing to the windows paradise desktop, the wallpaper picture changed and all of the icons had a background color of blue by the descriptions. Ironically, when I switched to the other 2 user names, (which are seldom used) the desktop was fine on those, icons and all. When I went to run C:\Cleandesktop\Other Profile, the only file that came up was PV on both of them. As I said those desktops were fine. If we can't get this corrected under the primary, we'll try to just use the other logins.

As I mentioned Kapersky is still running, very slowly, only at 40% and been running 22 minutes so far. I will send both that log and hijack again when done.

You'll never guess what corrected it...... in a telephone discussion with a friend, he suggested we try a free program called ICONOID found http://www.sillysot.com/download.htm when I had 1st downloaded it, I couldn't make the icon description backgrounds transparent, but after I did everything you said and tried running ICONOID again, it worked!!! Hubby is happy again :)

Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

Check this out for info on how to tighten your security settings and some good free tools to help prevent this from happening again.
