    Is 9x 98?

I am running 98 but not sure of the model. Which one should I get?

Yes, 9x generally means both 95 and 98.

On your computer, press the 'start' button -> 'settings' -> 'control panel' -> 'system' icon -> 'device manager' tab, and then go down to where it shows the sound controller and see if you can't find the model there. If no model is evident, then just down the 9x driver listed at the top.

When you get into device manager from the system icon in control panel, is there a yellow exclamation point next to your sound device listed? If so , when you go into the sound device's properties, what does it say is the problem?

Also, you may want to go into your BIOS, and if you have ONBOARD audio (Not the PCI Soundblaster card) on the motherboard, make sure it's disabled.

Once that's verified, go back into device manager. Change the view from 'Devices by type' (can be done from the file menu i think) to 'Resources by connection'. Then on the tree displayed, expand the Interrupt Request (IRQ) section, and post here what is listed there.

    There was no exclamation point.

The soundblaster was number five on the list of resources by connection.

Was there anything else with an exclamation point when you were in the Device Manager? Have you installed any new cards recently?

Go to Start > Settings > Control panel > Sounds & Multimedia

What is it using for Playback?

Also check the volume controls. Make sure it isn't muted.

Is the soundblaster the only device on IRQ 5? If not, what else was on 5?

There is nothing being used for playback.

Also there is IRQ holder for PCI steering on 5.

You did double click the download to install the driver files, right? If you have, please disregard the reply....just covering the bases.
You could probably find the model number very easily by opening the computer and looking at the sound chip on the card.
Unless you have some way to get documentation, like a parts list from whereever you got the computer, it is about the only way when drivers are gone....
I don't know if there would be anything with a model number in System Information, possible though....from Start, Run
    type just: msinfo32
Look around for your model number. It may have a blue entry next to it for missing drivers.
Only other way I know of but am not fond of reccommending is searching through the Registry...

So is SB PCI 128 available from the drop-down menu?
Multimedia Control Panel -> Audio tab -> Playback Device
    If so, select it . . .

Now go to Volume Control mixer and make sure the levels are up and not muted.

Could you post the IRQ listing, just in case we've overlooked something?

Start button, run, then type msinfo32 and hit ok...go to hardware, IRQs, edit, select all, edit, copy and come back and paste.
