Upon every start of my Compaq notebook, Spysweeper shows a error report alert prompting me to either send the report to Webroot or delete the report. I have done both and the error keeps reappearing on startup. In the report Spysweeper states " Error: Access violation at address 7C9026A2 in module 'ntdll.dll'. Write of address 004055F2." I have went back and forth with Webroot about this with no positive results. They finally told me they cannot help stating it was a Windows problem. I`m running WinXP sp2 Home Edition, IE 6.0. With AVG antivirus, Ad-Aware, Spysweeper 4.5.8, Spywareblaster and Spybot for all my protection. I am a computer novice and would appreciate any help to get rid of this alert.

lets have a look but i'm not sure we will find anything

go to here and download 'Hijack This!' self installer. Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu and an optional shortcut on desktop.
Click on the entry in start menu or on the desktop to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Download pocket killbox from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe & put it on the desktop where you can find it easily

Run hijackthis, put a tick in the box beside these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msci] C:\DOCUME~1\CRAIGO~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\200617184013_mcinfo.exe /insfin

now Start killbox, go to options on the top bar and make sure remove directories is enabled and remove duplicates is UNCHECKED paste the first file listed below into the full pathname and file to delete box

The file name will appear in the window, select delete on reboot , press the red X button, say yes to the prompt and NOto reboot now then repeat for each file in turn

[Note: Killbox makes backups of all deleted files & folders in a folder called C:\!killbox ] If Killbox tells you any files are missing don't worry but make a note and let us know in your next reply

    C:\DOCUME~1\CRAIGO~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\200617184013_mcinfo.exe

Then on killbox top bar press tools/delete temp files, in the pop up box in the NT section select temp & temp internet & cookies only and in the 9x section select c:\windows\temp & c:\temp then on the drop down user account box, select your account, then repeat for every user account on the computer

then reboot & tell us if it made any difference

    Hi Craig O2,

I have Spy Sweeper 4.5.8 and Webroot advises when running a scan to close all programs on my WinXP Pro SP2 computer (Build 683), Spyware Definitions v 601.

Occasionally, on startup, Spy Sweeper runs into the mess that is "Windows Startup" where everything starts in parallel, i.e. no ordering inherent in the process - Microsoft ought to really fix this aspect of their system to allow discreet ordering of startup items. When it runs into a problem, by default, it recommends reinstalling which I just ignnore. Instead, what I do, is to kill the Spy Sweeper process, and just restart it - works fine.

I suspect your situation is a result of Windows Startup in parallel when the other programs are loading and running their startups, but more so because the Windows Update process is not orderly which may (but shouldn't) produce the conflict that generates the error you see. The only way to troubleshoot this kind of error may be with a debug version of Spy Sweeper which probably only the developers at Webroot have access to.

I recommend you just kill Spy Sweeper when it gives those errors, and just restart it when everything else is already booted up.

If you do not have the latest build of 4.5.8, download/install it, and make sure you have the latest spyware definitions.

One thing you may be able to do to avoid the situation - if indeed it is caused by the Windows Startup, is to employ a freeware or paid Startup software which either controls each software startup with a specific time delay between startups, or allows you a finer grain of control on each startup.

Derek, Followed your instructions. The only thing I could not do is select c:\temp in the 9x section using killbox. (would not allow me to do this) After reboot, I am still having problem with error alert in spysweeper.

Thinking of not renewing subscription to spysweeper since this is the only program on my computer that seems to be not operating properly.

I ended up uninstalling Spysweeper and getting a refund from Webroot. Afterward, under the advice of a friend and because I do like this anti-spy program, I did again, purchase a subscription to Spysweeper.

After installing, I found out the problem was no longer present. I believe when I reinstalled the program, it was a updated version and it solved some sort of bug in the program. Anyway the problem was fixed. (y)
