Hi, I keep getting a pop-up message from a little red ball with a white cross in the middle - situated at the extreme right-hand side of the bottom of my screen, which says - Your computer is infected - Windows has detected spyware - It is recommended that you use special anti-spyware tools to prevent data loss - Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date anti-spyware for you. Click here to protect your computer from spyware! When I click on this icon, nothing gets downloaded or installed. I do have Windows Defender, which scans my PC on a daily basis, so I don't know what to do. I can't get rid of this icon either!!!!! HELP!!!!

Hi and welcome to TSG. From what you say I think you need to post a HijackThis log and then wait for someone qualified (gold shield next to their name) to take you through what needs to be done. Please go no further than the steps below and posting your results for now.You may want to print off this guide just in case.Don't go downloading / installing anything other than HJT for now, wait for advice from here.

Using Hijackthis with the self-installer that puts it into Program Files for you:

go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe

    • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
    • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Once you've done this, wait and you'll get great help.

    Richard.

    Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gwiz] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsystem.exe
    O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.imgfarm.com/images/nocache...up1.0.0.15.cab

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
    • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.
    • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
    • The page will refresh.
    • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
    • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
    • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
    • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

I don't see any anti-virus software running!

Load AVG http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/ it's free. Run a full scan and post the AVG scan results and a new HJT log.

Hi Cybertech, thanks for all the advice. Have done what you suggested, but have noticed that when downloading off the net, anything that I then save to my desktop and then run after I've gone out of the net, if there's any update box to be clicked on, I don't get the updates, I get a message that says that The Server Connection Failed. No Further Information Available and then proceeds to suggest that I check that I'm Internet Connected.................and various other things. This happens with all the downloads I do. Not sure what that's about. I have Internet Explorer and that's my default to the net, I do also have Mozilla Firefox, which my son, Andrew, prefers to use. Not sure if that's the problem. I'm connnected via a DSL line 24/7............???? Here's the AVG Scan report and the HJT log after I'd done all the things you instructed me to do. By the way, when I went to Remove/Uninstall Java related installations..............there weren't any, except the one you suggested I download!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    How is it running now?

I'm not sure what to tell you one the DSL disconnect. Perhaps start a thread in networking for that.

    Hi Cybertech,

Thanks for the assistance - the little red ball with the white cross in it has now vanished and I'm not getting the pop-ups anymore, but I had to uninstall AVG because it was blocking my access to my Outlook Express and my Internet Explorer - My ISP has suggested that I rather go on the net and download an anit-virus program that is free for a limited time period - 90 days or whatever.

I will start a new thread on the Forum for Networking and see what advice I'm given.

I'm really impressed with the help I've received on this site and will continue using it if I'm in trouble again or have any more 'technophobe' questions. He He He. LOL. I will also donate to you guys as soon as some finance my husband and I are waiting for, goes into our bank account. Thanks again and regards. Bevgail
