    Getting frustrated over here

It all started when I started seeing an ad for laughnetwork.com on the bottom of my screen about once a day. Additionally I started getting an update alert message approximately once per hour. Contents of the message titled update alert: New version is available would you like to download and install new version? Then it gives me the options yes and no, whatever I choose it just closes and pops up again within the hour. It doesn't let me close the message without choosing an option only through task manager – end task.

I also cannot log into yahoo mail beta. This is the error message I get: Yahoo mail beta cannot function properly under your browser's current settings. Please select internet options and from security set script activeX controls marked safe fro scripting to enable. Xmldom: failure -2146827859 automation server can't create object xmlhttp: success. I checked my settings it was already enabled.

    I ran the following:
    Lavasoft ad-adware se
    Spybot
    Counter spy
    Winpatrol
    Avg antispyware
    Super antispyware

I developed a new problem: my home page changed to msn.com and I can't change it.

I blocked all cookies by internet options. Every few second I get a message asking for permission to save a cookie from ad.yieldmanager.com.

Also the shortcut to internet explorer disappeared from the start menu and my desktop.

It seems the longer I wait without resolving the issue more problems crop up….

    I'm using windows xp
    With IE7

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi, goodgirl :)

    Welcome to TSG.

    Lets take a deeper look:

Download ComboFix from Here or Here. to your Desktop.

    Reboot to Safe mode:

Restart your computer and begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard just before Windows starts to load. If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

Perform the following actions in Safe Mode.
    • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

    Hi, goodgirl :)

What version is your Windows> Home, Profesional, Vista?

    Lets try this tool:

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
    • Choose your usual account.
    • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
    • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
    • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

    Hi, goodgirl :)

I find no reason for these programs to stall. I have noticed however, that two (2) Anti-Virus programs are running in the background.

Anti-Virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

There are basically two types of these programs:
    On-Access and On-Demand

    On-Access Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that run in the background all the time the PC is turned on and running. The main function of an On-Access scanner is to monitor activity on your machine.

    On-Demand Scanners
As the name implies, are scanners that only run when you ask them to.
Such as: Online Scans and scanners that run on your machine but are not actively scanning your machine.

Please remove one of the Antivirus programs in your computer.

Click Here to download XP_FIX.EXE. Save it on your desktop. Double click on the XP_FIX.EXE file and follow the prompts.

Restart the computer in Safe Mode and attempt to run Combofix and SDFix. Post the corresponding reports.

    ran xp_fix.exe
    restarted in safe mode
    combofix still didn't work
SDFix did come up at restart this time but the report didn't open automatically
I took it from SDFIX folder and pasted it here with a new hijack this log.

    Hi, goodgirl :)

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunServer] C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software\CounterSpy\Consumer\sunserver.exe

Now close all windows and browsers, other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

    Close Hijackthis.

    Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Sunbelt CounterSpy ( It is a Rogue program. You can read here.)

Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete these folders (if present):

    C:\Program Files\Sunbelt Software

    Restart the computer.

Click here to download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and allow to run the express scan
    • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
    • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
    • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
    • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
    • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
    • When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:
    • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    • This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
    • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
    • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
    • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
    • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
    • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply.
Please run the F-Secure Online Scanner

Note: This Scanner is for Internet Explorer Only!
    • For information click Here
    • Accept the License Agreement.
    • Once the ActiveX installs,Click Full System Scan
    • Once the download completes, the scan will begin automatically.
    • The scan will take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan completes, click the Automatic cleaning (recommended) button.
    • Click the Show Report button and Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh Hijackthis log and Dr.Web report.

    hi :D

when i tried to remove sunbelt in add or remove programs i got this error message:

the windows installer service couldn't be accessed. this can occur if you are running windows in safe mode or if windows installer isn't correctly installed. contact your support personnel for assistance.

and when i tried to delete it by start - windows explorer i got this:

Cannot delete sun execute hook.dll access is denied. make sure the disk isn't full or write protected and that the file isn't currently in use.

P.S. also i got a warning from my av program that a virus was found -
    file name c:\windows\system32\activescan\pskavs.dll
    malware name - win32.ctx
    malware type - virus\worm
    vps version - 000712-6 02/11/07

i got the option to move \rename, delete, repair or move to chest
recomended action was move to chest so i did that.

should i try to remove the sunbelt counterspy in regular mode?
or should i just download dr. web cureit and follow the rest of your instructions?

    Hi, goodgirl :)

We haven't been able to scan the computer yet as the tools fail to run. Attempt to remove Sunbelt CounterSpy in Normal Mode and proceed with the Dr.Web and F-Secure scans. If you AV finds a nasty, attempt to delete it or move it to the chest. Get those scans going.
