I keep getting a Authentication Required box popping up when I navigate to different web pages. The box says "The proxy proxy.uconn.edu:80 is requesting a username and password. The Site says "Squid proxy-caching web server" "

I certainly never set up a proxy on this computer, I know next to nothing about proxy's or how they work. The computer though did have several viruses until recently though, and I am wondering if this is part of one of those.... I cleaned the PC, virus scan cant find anything else, but this authernt box keeps popping up...

Anyone have an idea how I can get rid of it?

Please click HERE to download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile from the Main Menu.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

    IMPORTANT: Do not fix anything

    Run HijackThis again.

Select Do a system scan only.

Put a check mark on the following entry:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:6092

    Click Fix checked.

    ===================================================================

Next, download the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Run a quick scan and have it delete whatever it finds. Then, please post back the text report in your next reply.

Did you run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware at all?

Your log is still showing signs of a DNS Hijacker infection. If Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware doesn't take care of it, as it should have, try a full scan.

If no luck, please click on Report and kindly ask to be moved to the Virus & Other Malware Removal forum. Be sure to provide the appropriate reports in that forum after reading THIS. From there, be patient. You should get an answer within the next 48 hours. Those guys are really busy!

And by the way, I've just realized you were using Firefox and not IE.

In Firefox, click Tools > Options... > General > Advanced > Network > Settings > delete proxy settings > select No proxy > click OK.

I have tried tried to run the program you mentioned (Malwarebytes), but it is unresponsive. Installed with no problem, but it will not start up... clicking the icon does nothing. Thanks for the help... going to ask them to move this thread like you suggested.

Edit: Just noticed your edit about Firefox settings... changed them, hopefully that works .. thanks

Try running Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware after booting into Safe Mode.
