Over the last 3 days or so my PC has taken to switching itself off not long after start-up. After the third attempt or so it finally gives in and goes through the complete start-up routine and everything seems fine after that.
But it is a worry as to what's causing this and if anything can be done to rectify it.
    Can anyone help ?
    My O.S. is XP Home.

    Any new software installed recently
    Try safemode
tapping F8 as it starts and then choosing safemode from the menu with your keyboard arrow keys

    Does that always startup OK

any noise coming from the harddrive
    any freezing at all

You could run chkdsk - just to make sure the disk isn't failing

have you all your data backed up ?

Yes I have downloaded some new software, VLC Player and K-Lite Codec Pack.
No, I don't have my data backed-up but most of it is on an external hard-drive.
There is a grinding type noise coming from the PC when it's starting up.
There is no freezing but there is a slowness sometimes.
I will try the safe-mode method and get back to you.

We have no information on that computer, so do the following in it.

Download and save the TSG System Information Utility (SysInfo.exe) to the desktop.

After it's been downloaded and saved, double-click it to run it.

Information about your computer will appear.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE text here.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

VLC Media Player 2.2.1 doesn't need a separate code pack.

Hopefully, the hard drive isn't dying, but a grinding sound isn't good.

OK, I ran chkdsk using the 'automatically fix file system errors' option.
Once the operation was 100% completed (stage 3 of 3) I sat there watching the screen for 10 minutes or so. Nothing seemed to be happening.
I went away, had a coffee, came back only to see that a window had popped up on the screen which read 'this computer has recovered from a serious error' - send error report or don't send. I chose to send. After that another two of these windows appeared. This time I clicked the 'don't send' option for both.
Why did this happen when all I was doing was following your suggestion ?
Now I don't know what the result of this chkdsk procedure was and if it has only made things worse.
I'm tempted to try the 'scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors' method but I understand that could take many hours and there's no telling what damage (if any) it may cause to my PC bearing in mind what has just happened after trying the 'automatically fix file system errors' option/method.
Please advise and please explain what could have caused this and why the chkdsk operation didn't seem to work.

OK, I ran chkdsk a second time using the 'automatically fix file system errors' option and this time I didn't move from the computer.
Once the procedure was completed I didn't even have time to read the text 'Windows has finished........' that's all I had time to read before the system re-started itself
This time there was no 'serious error' message. Although I still don't know what good running chkdsk did (if any).

Go here and click the large green "Download" button to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.5 (HijackThis.exe) to your desktop.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows.

Double-click it and allow its main window to load.

Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis".

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear.

    Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log file here.

I haven't got a clue what you mean by 'winlogon entry' - I don't see that anywhere on the screenshot. How do I find it ?
