    I have recently bought a new computer which has Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on it. My main usage for this would be to play games but I'm having a lot of trouble playing games particularly on steam. I have been trying to play Arma-II recently and I was told I need to install Directx 9. I download various versions of it and everytime it gets to a certain point while installing it comes up with an error message saying "Internal System Error" and then tells me to look at these error logs.

    Here is the DXError.log

    --------------------
    [07/19/12 23:51:53] module: dxupdate(Mar 16 2009), file: dxupdate.cpp, line: 5848, function: DirectXUpdateInstallPlugIn

    RegisterDllFromSection() failed.

    --------------------
    [07/19/12 23:51:53] module: dsetup32(Mar 16 2009), file: dxupdate.cpp, line: 280, function: CSetup::InstallPlugIn

    DirectXUpdateInstallPlugIn() failed.

    [07/19/12 23:51:53] module: dsetup32(Mar 16 2009), file: setup.cpp, line: 1701, function: CSetup::SetupForDirectX

    InstallPlugIn() failed.

    and here is the DirectX.log

    07/19/12 23:51:53: DXSetup: DSetupCallback(): Phase = 3, Steps = 0
    07/19/12 23:51:54: dsetup32: Installation ended with value -9 = Internal or unsupported error
    07/19/12 23:51:56: DXSetup: WM_APP_ENDINSTALL
    07/19/12 23:51:56: DXSetup: ~CDXWSetup()

    Obviously this doesn't mean anything to me as I am not an expert so I come here to ask for solutions which i despearately need.

    Have you tried this? http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

    Windows 7 comes with DX 11 and you can't downgrade DX. However if you install 9c, it apparently adds some files that 11 is missing....

    ETA: If it says something about not allowing you to install it due to having a newer version you can try this one: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

    If that still doesn't work, this is a link to the whole thing but it has a lot of cabs: http://download.cnet.com/Microsoft-DirectX-Drivers-Redistributable/3000-2121_4-10305889.html

    If the first two links don't work, the third should. Good luck.

    Yes I have tried that and when I try run the game in steam it always tries to install a version of directx 9 so it obviously needs that

    Other than that you can stop steam from performing the "first time setup" by deleting the '(number)_install.vdf' file in the games folder.

    I have tried that also but along with the "first time setup" problem when I click play on steam it does completely nothing. Comes up with the rotating loading circle and nothing happens, no errors or nothing. I have also tried running the .exe directly but another error comes up which I looked up and I was told I need to install Directx 9 which is how I got to my original problem.

    Are you running DXSETUP as an admin? Have you tried installing it with an offline version vs using the web install already? That was the third link I gave you..

    Yes I have, several times. I have also tried installing it in clean boot/safe mode.

    That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about installing the whole thing from an offline version that includes the cab files which the DX is extracted from. I don't see anything about that in your logs, unless you're not posting the whole thing. If you're using the web version, it downloads all the files as you are installing.

    I finally found a solution. I had to download two different .dll files for it to work. Thanks for the help anyway though :)
