My daughter's Dell Inspiron 1525, service tag J53SWG1. The laptop is running Windows Vista Ultimate with the most recent service pack. (Windows update does not show any available updates.)

The laptop has been giving Blue screen errors for the past 1-2 weeks. The blue screen error are stop error 7a & all refer to ataport.sys.

The stop errors occur while on the internet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the Dell support site that's assigned ONLY to your daughter's Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop.

According to its system configuration section, it was purchased in July 2008 and came with Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit.

You might want to add and save this site in your browser's favorites/bookmarks list so you can quickly refer to it when needed.

-------------------------------------------------------

That ataport.sys error message while on-line is possibly caused my an infection in that laptop.

Are you familiar with and have you used AdwCleaner or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or SUPERAntiSpyware?
(All free)

I'm with you, flavallee - I suspect a possible rootkit infection.
I was going to recommend TDSSKiller, but that's one tool that I prefer the gold shield removal specialists use here and not me.

I ran both Malwarebytes Anti-Malware & SUPERAntiSpyware, neither found any problems. I also downloaded & ran Tdsskiller & it didn't find anything.

Go here, then click the large blue "Download Now @ Bleeping Computer" button to download and save AdwCleaner.exe to your desktop.

Close all open windows first, then double-click AdwCleaner.exe to load its main window.

Click the "Scan" button, then allow the scanning process to finish.
(Note: Several seconds may pass before the scanning process starts, so be patient.)

Click the "Logfile" button.

When the log appears, save it.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log here.

Go into the C:\AdwCleaner folder.

You can then delete that massive accumulation of AdwCleaner.txt files.

There's no need to save them, and they add clutter to a log.

------------------------------------------------------------

Close all open windows first, then double-click AdwCleaner.exe to load its main window.

Click the "Scan" button, then allow the scanning process to finish.
(Note: Several seconds may pass before the scanning process starts, so be patient.)

Click the "Cleaning" button, then click "OK".

Allow the cleaning process to finish.

When it's finished, click "OK" in each window that appears.

The computer will restart.

When the log appears during restart, save it.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log here.

Go here, then click the large blue "Download Now @ Author's site" button to download and save TFC.exe (Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer) to your desktop.

After it's downloaded and saved, close all open windows.

Double-click it to load its main window.

Click the "Start" button.

If there are a large number of temp files and/or there are multiple user accounts, the temp file deletion process may appear to freeze or may take a few minutes, so be patient.

After the temp file deletion process is finished, restart the computer.

---------------------------------------------------------

Is that stop error message still occurring?

I ran the TFC.EXE & it deleted 475 MB of files.

My dauhter has not had a BSOD in at least a week, so I think the laptop might be fixed.

Thank you for the help
