Problems with the audio playback when recording streaming audio :

I have downloaded several 'what you hear' recording apps. Tonight was Audacity with Lame encoder and then when that did not work, downloaded and installed MP3MyMP3.

Since they do not come with great instructions, all I did was go to my favorite streaming audio from a local radio station ; got the show playing through my speakers; opened up the recording app and then pressed the record button. Both apps seemed to be recording and both saved to mp3 files. But when I play them back there is no audio. Am I missing a step ?

my audio card is NVIDAI(R)nFORCE AUDIO. OS is XP.

    Thanks

    Jay

open up your playback control (double click on the speaker in the system tray)
make sure levels are up and nothings muted

    then choose... options>properties...select "recording"
put a check in all the "show controls" items >ok
check to see if "what you hear" is selected and volume is up

with audacity, as long as you put the lame encoder in the audacity folder
and pointed the system to it that first time you "exported as mp3" it should work

I had de-installed Audacity and was most recently using MP3MyMP3.

    I did the following :

    "then choose... options>properties...select "recording"
put a check in all the "show controls" items >ok
check to see if "what you hear" is selected and volume is up"

I do not see a 'what you hear' in the controls / recording box. I have :
stereo mix ; mon mix ; aux ; video ; cd audio ; line-in; microphome; SPIDF . I made sure all the volumes were up and did another test ..... same results.

Note : In this control box, under each of the above controls there is only one box checked in the Select Box - in this case I have line-in checked. I then went back and put a check mark under SPIDF (whatever that is) and retested. In MP3MyMP3 I have selected SPIDF as the 'input device'. Still no audio.

"I do not see a 'what you hear' in the controls / recording box. I have"

that's your prob. right there i believe.
i don't know what brand of comp. you have but,
a friend of mine has an older dell and does not have this option either
and he cannot record stuff as it's being heard.

you may wanna try googling around maybe there's some kinda fix to get around it.

in the meantime you could try this though, i don't use it and generally stay away from anything that has the word "toolbar" in it.
or this one...i just tried this one, it seems to record ok but there appears to be a "wanna buy the pay version" nag screen every time you use it (you'll still need audacity or something else if you wanna trim down/edit your recordings.

Before downloading the second one that you thought might work, FREE Hi-Q Recorder , I sent an email to them asking if theirs would overcome the problem I have been having with no audio being saved in my mp3 files. A response came back saying :

"That's a common problem you have. It may be that you have Integrated audio
which in most cases doesn't include the What-u-hear or similar capability or
it could be Vista if you're running that."

"My recorder's won't solve your problem but would work if we can figure
out the source of your problem."

He then went on to ask the same things you did regarding the recording box options. I provided that info but have not heard back from them.

    umm...
i used to record "what you hear" all the time with integrated audio,
before i got the cheepo soundcard that i have now.
i'm not sure what he's talking about.

i would try that prog. anyway just to see for myself, but that's just me.
other than that i don't know what to tell ya, except do some googling and try to find out if anyone has a fix for not having "what you hear" in your recording section.

I got MP3MyMP3 working. It seems that the recording source should have been stereo mix. I just tried different things and that was it.

    Thanks
