    Hi everyone!

    So i just recently bought a new motherboard/cpu/memory/case.
    Then i took the 2 hard drives/graphics card out of my old machine.
    This machine is running fine!

    I'm now trying to set up my old motherboard/computer with an old hard drive i have.
    First, i had an 80 conductor problem, but i bought 2 brand new IDE cables.

    Now, when i try to install windows... it freezes on the screen "Setup is inspecting your current hardware configuration..."
    I've tried a couple hard drives now... but they are all old. And the same thing happens.

    Could it be 3 faulty hard drives in a row?
    or something else!?!

    Motherboard = ECS
    CPU = AMD SEMPRON
    Memory = 512mb

    Go into bios and turn off any USB devices (assuming your mouse and keyboard are not USB

    Also remove any/all addon internal cards
    Remove anything attached to the computer not needed

    If that works

    Return on USB in bios

    Are the replacement hard drives recognised correctly in BIOS?

    That's great Muffy7

    Obviously make sure the USB goes back on (Windows may load new drivers)

    Basically the less Windows has to do, to install, the better.

    Seeming you have had this issue (with install) I would recommend making a bootable (ghost) image of the drive
    Note:
    There are a number of "image" programs Drive Image; Ghost; Acronis True Image Not sure which one the board recommends - possibly somebody will reply back with what to use, so I can normally recommend to others.

    The point being here, that installing Windows has forced you to temporarily turn off USB support in bios. Using an "image" will avoid this (and is quicker, and helpful for you and others installing Windows in the future)
    Your choice. (Maybe do all the MS security updates first)

    Reply back if you would want a list of normal programs that should be on a standard Windows Xp image.
