Iam planning to upgrade from Win/XP Pro to Win7 and want to know which
Windows 7 I should install? There is a 32 bit and 64 bit version and I'm
a bit confused as to which one is correct for my laptop.
I "think" I have a 32 bit unit, but am not quite sure.
I've listed some info from my computer which I hope helps to give me an answer.

I hope I didn't post too much info.

The Toshiba Satellite Pro L300 series laptop has several models, so we need to determine which one you have.

Look at the stickers on the bottom of it and advise us what the part number and model number are.

Once it's confirmed which one you have, we can determine if Windows 7 drivers exist for all of its devices.

-------------------------------------------------------

That series laptop supports a maximum of 4 GB(4096 MB) of RAM.

It already has 3 GB(3072 MB) of RAM, so you have the option of adding another 1 GB(1024 MB) of RAM to it.

It uses 200-pin, DDR2 PC2-6400(DDR2-800), 1.8 volt, unbuffered, non-ECC, SODIMM modules.

-------------------------------------------------------

Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 32-bit is probably what you need.

Thanks Frank for the quick response.
My SatellitePro is L300-EZ100SX
Model PSLB1U-01E011
Can I do the upgrade of RAM myself, or are laptops more
difficult to work on?
Also, do I just add one more MB of must I get 4MB chip?

Here is the support site for the Toshiba Satellite Pro L300-EZ1005X (PSLB1U-01E011) laptop.

You should add and save this site in your browser's favorites/bookmarks list so you can refer to it when needed.

According to its "Drivers & Updates" section, all of that laptop's primary devices are supported by Windows 7 32-bit

The install of Windows 7 32-bit may install all the needed drivers, but if it doesn't, you can obtain the needed ones from the list.

Can I do the upgrade of RAM myself, or are laptops more difficult to work on?
According to its detailed specifications, that laptop came with a 1 GB(1024 MB) module in 1 of its 2 slots.

If it currently has 3 GB(3072 MB) of RAM, a 2 GB(2048 MB) module has been added to the second slot.

You can replace the original 1 GB(1024 MB) module with another 2 GB(2048 MB) module, but it's not really necessary.

Windows 7 32-bit will run just fine with 3 GB(3072 MB) of RAM.

That's great news. One more query please,..
I see a site (thesoftwarestore.com) that has a Win 7 Home Premium 32 bit Disc for $37.00 which they say says
it's labeled "Dell, but will run on any computer." Is this a good idea since other sites have Win 7 32 bit for $97 and up?

That URL takes me to an eBay site, and I didn't see any Windows operating systems in the list. What's the exact URL that you looked at?

I have doubts if you can buy a legitimate copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit (with its activation key) for $37.00, but it's possible.

I'm not familiar with that site or company, so I don't know how legitimate it is.

I've requested some of the Moderators/Administrators to chime in and give their advice.

I've never heard of being able to legitimately buy a Dell (or any other brand) branded Windows. Since Windows 7 is almost non available now the price for a legit purchase has gone way up--Windows 7 Home Premium now costs in the $200 range. And it has never been available for as low as $57 except for the pre-release sale in July 2009 for "Upgrade" versions. This Upgrade version is probably legit.

I do not beleive that you can use a DELL disc on any PC. it is designed for a DELL OEM PC because it is designed to look for the SLIC activation codes embedded in the motherboard of a Dell Machine. Meaning you DONT need a COA for it AS long as you have a Windows 7 COA on the case.

So what this site is saying, is not true?
Steve

"What's in the package: Genuine Windows 7 Home Bit DVD, White CD Sleeve, Genuine Certificate Of Authenticity License and Product Key for Activation. This Product Is Branded Dell, But Will Do A Full Install On ANY Brand Computer And Activate With The New Product Key And COA."

Heres the thing, DELL uses SLIC activation meaning they activate windows based on codes stored in the motherboards BIOS. I used to work on Dell and have a friend that does it...basically you can use a Dell PC that came preinstalled with Windows 7 Home Premium COA and you can use a DELL Windows Pro or Ultimate Installtion DVD and it will install and activate NO PROBLEM because it reads the SLIC activation in the BIOS and confirms its accepted. However, you CANNOT use a DELL DVD for anything BUT a DELL because it will always look for that SLIC table which is NOT present in any mobo's but those from Dell machines. I am not wanting to step on legalities here saying it LEGIT or LEGAL, BUT that's how it works.

Have you ever heard of that web site before? Ever dealt with them or have any information on their legitimacy?

Have you ever heard of Dell selling Windows installation DVDs whether for only Dell or any PC? Other than the web site you referenced have you ever heard of any retailer selling Dell branded Windows installation DVDs? Or any HP/Acer/Toshiba/Lenovo/etc. branded Windows installation DVDs?

Why do you think that place is selling Windows 7 Home Premium for $57 when an Upgrade version--not even a retail version--now sells for > $200 and sold for ~ $100 for Upgrade and ~ $200 for Retail when it was widely available?
