Hello! My last computer had Norton, and I purchased the two year renewal. Unfortunately there was catastrophic failure(i.e. breakage) and of course my new laptop has McAfee. Both are(were)HP. Since I purchased the renewal and have the key code my hope was to uninstall McAfee and install Norton. The only idea I had was to download the free trial to get the software then use the key when it expired, but it wouldn't work. Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

Leave both Norton and McAfee in the dust. Use Microsoft Security Essentials. It is Free and easy to use.

I would not recommend trashing an anti-virus program that you have paid for in favour of a free one until the paid period expires at least. Even then my preference is paid but of course everyone has their own opinion on that.

I would follow the instructions on Norton's site on how to cancel the license from the device that is no longer being used and transfer it to the new device:

If you do decide to uninstall McAfee and Norton in the future, make sure to use their removal tools afterwards so any leftover registry and file "debris" from them is removed from your computers.

Indeed. I should have mentioned that before proceeding with installing Norton you should uninstall McAfee the regular way first and then use their removal tool as flavallee mentioned afterwards to ensure complete removal in order to avoid any problems with the new installation of Norton.

No matter, the main thing is that it's fixed now to your satisfaction. :)
