    Hello,
I have several questions and I think they all probably have to do with virus or spy ware, so I thought I would start here. Operating system is Windows XP

1.When I start my computer it is taking about 2 1/2 to 3 minutes to get to the log on screen. Then, the System 32 folder opens up and is just open on the desktop. This has never happened before.

2.When I go to the Internet in IE I generally can't access items on the page. Example. If I open my bank website, it won't let me go to anything else on the page. It acts like it's doing something, takes forever and then goes back to the page I was on. I don't have the problem if I access the Internet through AOL.

3.When I access Google,a help page,my bank site, even your site, either in IE or AOL all of the print on the page is in a large font and if I print anything it is in this large font. Does my computer know I turned a year older? What gives with this? :)

    Things I've done.
I've run my virus scan and supposedly it's up to date according to McAfee.
I've run my SpyBot and my AOL Spyware. Spybot found MyWebSearch and supposedly deleted it.
I uninstalled games that were expired,I've been running the Clean-up program
and finally last night I ran my defrag.
When I ran the defrag I delayed the screensaver by 90 minutes and it also changed my desktop even though I had not asked it to do that. Now it doesn't have the saved picture that I was using (the name is there, but it is a blue screen) in the options for the desktop.

I searched the Forums and couldn't find anything specifically dealing with these problems, but I did go ahead and download Hijack This, since that seemed to be the first step suggested for the majority of problems.

I would appreciate anything you could help with.
    Thanks so much,
    Caty49

    Hi and welcome to TSG,

Can you tell why is it that you don't have any Microsoft Service Packs installed on this computer?

Ok, I have downloaded the Service Packs and have to back up my system, then I will install and get back with you. Sorry!

I didn't want you to install them yet as that can cause other problems if done while there is infection. I just wondered why you hadn't done it before now as you were leaving your computer wide open for infection.

    Download Cleanup from Here
    • A window will open and choose SAVE, then DESKTOP as the destination.
    • On your Desktop, click on Cleanup40.exe icon.
    • Then, click RUN and place a checkmark beside "I Agree"
    • Then click NEXT followed by START and OK.
    • A window will appear with many choices, keep all the defaults as set when the Slide Bar to the left is set to Standard Quality.
    • Click OK
    • DO NOT RUN IT YET

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here.
    • Install ewido.
    • During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
    • Launch ewido
    • It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
    • On the left side of the main screen click update
    • Click on Start and let it update.
    • DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

    Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
    • Save the report to your desktop

    Run Cleanup:
    • Click on the "Cleanup" button and let it run.
    • Once its done, close the program.

Go to Control Panel - Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Restart back into Windows normally now.

Do a Panda Active Scan. Be sure to save the log it creates.

Come back here and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the logs from the Ewido and Panda scans.

    Hello,
Thank you so much for the detailed explanations. I have experienced a health problem this week and so am slow getting back to this. I did not install the Service packs, just downloaded them. I will work on getting all of this back to you - but it may be a week or two.
    thank you,
    Caty49

Thanks for your help. But the problem was beyond my understanding so after a slight computer crash  a friend helped me get back up and running. I also went ahead and installed a brand new fresh copy of xp with the service packs already on. I had backed up my hard drive with my brand new external hard drive so it wasn't a big crash. My copy of XP was part of a network and I couldn't upgrade. Long story. But I'm all fixed and appreciate your help.
