What is the best internet security/anti virus ect in your opinion and why? I need a new one and am looking for one that has the obvious stuff: real-time protection, its own firewall and obviously can be used to scan drives ect.

Sorry if this is in the wrong spot, I am not too sure how to use this site, I don’t use it that often.

Many members here recommend Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=5201 or http://www.avast.com/en-us/index both are free. ONLY USE ONE Anti-Virus program, having more than one will cause problems!

In conjunction with either of them use both of the following and run them at least once a week.
    Malwarebytes
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php
    Superantispyware
    http://www.superantispyware.com/down...NTISPYWAREFREE

Make sure to update their definition files during the install process.
Make sure to uncheck and decline to install any extras, such as toolbars and homepages, they may offer.
Make sure to uncheck or decline to use the "Pro" or "Trial" version, if it's offered.
After they're installed and updated, restart the computer.
Run a quick scan with each one.
After each quick scan is finished, select and remove EVERYTHING that was found.

I have used ESET NOD32 for several years and like it. A while ago, a fellow member Aka Brett did some testing with then current new viruses and found that Kaspersky and ESET tend to survive viruses that attack and disable AV. Those that survive get to receive virus signatures in the future and gets the infection removed. ESET has a security suite called ESET Smart Security and it includes a firewall.

Note this well: no security suite is ever going to ever provide 100% security. And no antivirus is ever going to catch all viruses. There are simply too many new viruses created every day. Sure, antivirus products provide behavioral detection but they simply don't activate in some circumstances and all you need is one security hole in your pc to get infected (weakest link). There are also other types of threats that antivirus doesn't cover and I can break it down for you if you wish.

I was having trouble with my computer ever since I updated to TrendMicro Titanium a month, or so, ago.
I found this thread and followed the advice given by captainron and - voila! - after trashing TrendMicro, my computer is working 200% better and as good as new now.
    Thanks, Captain!(y)(y)

Look at results from several groups, such as AV Test, AV Comparatives, etc.
