Hi, I was wondering if someone could help me please? I have some files on an external hard-drive that I've had problems accessing and have finally managed to figure out how to take ownership of the files by booting up my PC in safe mode (I have Windows XP Home), logging in as an administrator and then changing to administrator in the owner tab. I've now transferred all the files to the desktop on my PC but I now have the problem that I can only access them in safe mode and am unable to transfer them onto a CD or DVD rom and my memory stick won't register either. The files don't appear on my desktop when I boot up my PC the usual way, even though my setting in user accounts is admin. How do I go about transferring these files for use on my laptop (Windows 7 Professional) or on my PC in normal mode? Help!!!!

When you insert you're usb memory stick it doesn't register? This is a firmware issue you might need to install missing drivers- You aren't able to open the drive from "My computers" Did you disable auto-play? Can I have the make and model of the PC you are using that is having problems registering you're cd or dvd and usb memory stick.

Thanks for the response, but I think I have figured it out. I thought I had to log in as an administrator in safe mode to be able to access the security and owner tabs under properties. I initially followed the instructions from the exact same site you sent the link for and clicked the administrator group and changed permissions to that group. I then copied the files to my desktop still logged in as an administrator and therefore couldn't access them when logged in normally with my user name. What I've done that seems to have worked is to enter safe mode, log in under my user name and change the permissions to my user name then copy the files to the desktop where they remain when out of safe mode. I've managed to transfer over all the files I needed, no problems. I don't know if the help from the Microsoft site assumes this has already been tried and hasn't worked so suggests another method or what? It's driven me crazy trying to figure out what to do from all the information out there, I'm just glad it's finally worked.
    Thanks again for your response,
    Bek.

XP home edition can be tricky with safe-mode admin and owner "admin" permissions- I'm glad you got it all worked out! If you can mark this post as solved so other advisers know you're issue is resolved I'd greatly appreciate it.
