I somehow got a Trojan Start Page Virus.

When I open my Internet Explorer, it changes my opening page to a Search engine page with no URL postings when hovering over the topics. I manually go in and try to change it back to the default or preferred site to open up to, but always goes back to this page.

I have Norton, which caught the virus, I have Pest Patrol, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Zone Alarm Pro, and nothing can remove it.

This happened once before and I downloaded a free Trojan removal tool, and did the trick.

But this time around, I tried to download 2 different trojan removal softwares, and both times, it came up with a warning that the download corrupted due to a virus and the complete download did not occur, then prompts me to delete and reinstall the software. Repeats the same issue.

Also, my Windows Media Player will work if I go to a site and play a video or news bit, but the shortcut and desktop icon fails to work, so I deleted it.

Where can I go to do a new download of media player?

I am running Windows XP.

Thanks again,,,,,,,,,,,I just cannot seem to remove this one.....and cannot figure out how to get a clean download of trojan removal tools, short of buying one from a store. :(

Hi DUNBAR

Welcome to TSG! :)

Please do this. Click here to download Hijack This. Click on the Hijackthis.exe.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

*Note: When you download Hijack This Do Not download it to a temp folder or to the desktop. Create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This and put it in that folder.

I put question marks next to the 3 that I think do not belong on there. Those 3 are unfamiliar, and I cannot get it to go away. I forgot to mention that I have System Mechanic.

Download this zip.

http://www.zero.vulc4n.com/downloads/pv.zip

unzip it to the desktop.

Be sure to have at least 1 internet explorer window open.

Double click on the runme.bat

This will open a command window. In the command window enter the digit 1 by hitting the 1 key on your keyboard and then hit the Enter key.

Notepad will open with a log in it. Please copy and paste the log into this thread.

That @#$* is what is causing the issue with the start up page,,,,,,,when I check mark it and delete, it comes right back when I open an internet explorer window.

Is this something I could find in my add and remove programs? And delete the software from there?

My Norton just ran, found nothing, ran System Mechanic, found 85 entries, and just ran Spybot with nothing found.

I know those need to go, but there is a hidden file in the registry that keeps loading it and until we find out the name of that hidden file we cannot fix this. Some of these new variants of this hijacker are even more complicated than that.

Did you unzip the pv.zip file? It must be unzipped first the click on the runme.bat file.

No. It won't open, just opens up a browser saying that the page cannot be found.

I would have to assume that maybe something on my computer is keeping me from opening that file?

I even had 3 IE windows open so it could go to one of those pages.

Thank you for the time your spending on this, I have been screwing with this for 3 hours, and running out of patience.

If you need questions about plumbing answered, I know all. Master Plumber here.

I am close to brain fried on this one, but you did lead me to what the problem is. Is there a way I can go to that website of the file instead of the file itself and download it from there?

Maybe disable one of my software programs that might be causing this?

You have me confused now! Are you saying that you cannot get to the website to download the pv.zip file?

I see now. Sorry, the link isn't working for me now either. Hold on I'm checking to see what's up and if we can download it from a different location.

I had a problem similar to yours and seem to have eradicated it. If you're still stuck post a new HJT log and I'll show you what I did.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you.

Freeatlast has had some success with the following sequence - let's give it a try. Start with the following: Go here: http://www10.brinkster.com/expl0iter/freeatlast/PVtool.htm and download "Xfind.zip" from there. Unzip, run the 'find.bat' inside. Wait till it terminates and find 'log.txt' inside and copy/paste into your next reply.

Next, do this: open the registry from start/run/regedit And expand the following: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\PROTOCOLS\Filter. RightClick the 'filter' key, choose 'export' name it whatever you wish and save.

Navigate to this key next:
*HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\
Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersionWindows. Highlite the
'Windows' key there and find this value on the right panel:
Appint_Dlls< RightClick and rename to:
->Appinit_Dlls1
Close regedit, reopen it to the same key, Highlite the
'Windows' key there,
Export it the same way as you did the other and save.

Lastly, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects< Export that Browser Helper Objects Subfolder the same way. Next Right Click the Browser Helper Objects Subfolder and choose Security/permissions and then click the "Advanced" button in the lower right corner. Now de-select (uncheck) the "inherit from parent...permissions" lower box. Hit ok' and 'remove' on next prompts.

That will prevent it from spreading further. Into your next reply, navigate to the reg files you saved, RightClick each one and choose >Edit. The reg key will open in Notepad. Copy the contents and post here with the log.txt and a new hijackthis log.

-Windows key
-Browser Helper objects key
-Filter key
-find.bat(log.txt)

No Problem, I really appreciate you and everyone else that is trying to help me figure this out.

I went to that website, and I tried to unzip the 2 folders it produced when I downloaded it, and it says that its corrupted. So I cannot locate find.bat or log.txt.

I couldn't figure it out,,,,,,,so I went to the site again and tried to download it,,,,,,and no such luck. :(

But I was able to get the others that you requested, here is the following:

That Windows text info is massive...and will never go on here I would imagine, I could send it to you by email, and I cannot send you the log.txt since I couldn't open that.

Everything else, I did do.

By the way, how serious is this issue that I have with my computer, other than that start page opening on IE?
