Norton is telling me I have this trojan.startpage.virus and I know I do. IE doesn't open anything I want it to open. It actually opens the CDRom drive and laughs at me. I deleted the file found by Norton, as described on their website, and followed their removal instructions, which did not work.

I ran adaware 6.0 (5 items) and Spybot Search and Destroy (found 140 items) last night. Cleaned out those items. Then ran Norton and found this. I removed "webrebates" last night also, but it's back...

Laptop background. Windows XP that always uses dialup. However, connected to highspeed line to download SP1 and critical updates... and look what happened...

Here is the Hijackthis log. I would appreciate assistance :) .

    Hi Spudly

    Welcome to TSG! :)

First go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall the following programs if they are there:

    Bargain Buddy
    ClipGenie
    Web_Rebates

Click here to download CWShredder. Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

When it is finished restart your computer.

Go here and download Adaware SE.

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode tick Perform full system scan.

Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

    Restart your computer.

Come back here and post another Hijack This log and we'll get rid of what's left.

Could not find clipgenie to remove.

Ran CWshredder and removed 8 infected IE registry values (y)

    Ad-Aware SE found 60 items! Gone (y)

    Here's the latest after reboot.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = +s

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = +s

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O2 - BHO: (no name) - SOFTWARE - (no file)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [stcinstaller] c:\installer\id53.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [stuieea] C:\DOCUME~1\JEFFFR~1\APPLIC~1\llegktst.exe -QuieT

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WebInstall2] C:\Program Files\ClipGenie\WebInstall.exe /R

    Restart to safe mode.

How to start your computer in safe mode

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

Now find and delete this file:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff Frechette\Application Data\llegktst.exe

    Delete these folders:

    C:\installer
    C:\Program Files\ClipGenie

Question... I logged on in safe mode under administrator. Which found llegkst.exe under "c:\documents and settings\all users\application data"

If I delete it here, will it delete it when I log as a Jeff? Or do I need to delete it in both places. I'm not sure how it replicates itself...

    Thanks

It was only in the "all users" area.

I'm rebooting in normal mode now... fingers crossed!
