My machine at home has Norton anti-virus, ZoneAlarm and Yahoo anti-spyware. Despite all that, it still has contracted Trojan.Win32.Qhost.df.

I turned off system restore and booted into safe mode. Then I ran Yahoo anti-spyware and removed the trojan. I then ran Norton and it came up clean. When I rebooted into normal mode and ran Yahoo anti-spyware, there it was again. It says the trojan is in the registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\curr entversion\ruins. But when I run regedit, there is no folder called \ruins. There is one called \run, but that one does not have the trojan (hwiper.exe nor hclean32.exe) in it.

I then downloaded Symantec's trojan.qhosts removal tool from their website. Went back into safe mode and ran the tool. It said it didn't find anything. Yet Yahoo anti-spyware still says it is there. I know it is there because when I search for something in either Yahoo or Google, and click on the link, it takes me to an advertisement of some sort. I click "back" then the link again and I get a second advertisement. After clicking "back" again and the link a third time, only then do I get the page I want.

Does anyone have any advice on how to get rid of this darn thing??

Hi voiceoflg

Welcome to TSG! :)

Before we do anything, I'd like to ask you to pst a screenshot of something for me. Do you know how to do that? If so, I'd like to see a screenshot of your TCP/IP properties.

Go to Control Panel. - If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category. If you are in Classic View, go to the next step .
  • Double-click the Network Connections icon
  • Right-click the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties.
  • Hilight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.
  • Post a screenshot of that Properties window please.

* Click Here and download Killbox and save it to your desktop.

* Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

* Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to.

* Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

* Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

* Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it.
  • Put a tick by Standard File Kill.
  • In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time:

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CSGQA.EXE

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMALJ.EXE

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DMFTR.EXE

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmisj.exe

  • Click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file.
  • It will ask for confimation to delete the file.
  • Click Yes.
  • Continue with that procedure until you have pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.
  • Killbox may tell you that one or more files do not exist.
  • If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.
  • Next in Killbox go to Tools > Delete Temp Files
  • In the window that pops up, put a check by ALL the options there except these three:
    • XP Prefetch
    • Recent
    • History
  • Now click the Delete Selected Temp Files button.
  • Exit the Killbox.

* Restart back into Windows normally now.

* Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

When the scan is finished, save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

When I ran HJT...

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmisj.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmisj.exe

wasn't there. In its place was...

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmisj.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmiqx.exe

Should I click that instead?
