My computer has been infected with several viruses for a few weeks now and I have be unsuccessful in removing them myself, therefore, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Problems usually occur while I'm browsing the internet (I primarily use Firefox, but once in a while Internet Explorer will open a window on it's own...). I'll try to open a certain page and it won't load, but the "problem loading page" page never comes up either. I have found that manually ending the "explorer.exe" process and then starting the process up again will temporarily solve my problem (but I obviously don't want to be doing that every time I need the internet). Sometimes everything on my desktop will disappear except for the background and then momentarily all return back to normal. Also, only about once a day, a new tab will open in Firefox that I had not requested.

Symantec has notified me of several trojans it has found including Zlob, Vundo, and Metajuan. It says they have been deleted successfully, however, I will later receive another notice about the same trojan (with a different .dll filename). One Trojan.Vundo notification that kept reappearing (over 100 times in two hours) had the filename "yayvwts.dll" and Symantec said the action taken was "left alone" until it finally was able to delete it successfully (I have no idea if that was useful information or not, but just in case...).

I have downloaded and scanned my computer with Ad-Aware 2007 and Spyware Doctor, the latter of which has found a lot of adware and the trojans ConHook and Virtumonde. I usually remove everything they find, but I'll scan again the next day or so and the same things keep being found.

I have previously installed and used P2P file sharing programs (utorrent and limewire, to be exact) which likely gave me these problems in the first place, so they have now been uninstalled (although I've learned from experience that uninstalling programs doesn't always get rid of everything you installed in the first place...)

My computer model is a Dell Latitude D600 and my operating system is Windows XP with service pack 2. I've had it for over 4.5 years, so it's been through a lot :)

Here is my Hijack This file and thanks in advance:

    Hi, sneveu :)

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
    1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
    2. Close any open browsers.
    3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
      -----------------------------------------------------------
      • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
      • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
        -----------------------------------------------------------
      • Close any open browsers.
      • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
      • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
      • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
      -----------------------------------------------------------
    4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Hi JSntgRvr! Thanks for the quick response, I really appreciate it!

Okay... I followed your instructions, but I had to run ComboFix three times before it finally produced a log (I swear I did not touch my computer the whole time it was doing the scan!). The first time it stopped after completing Stage_30 and I had to reboot. The second time it completed all stages up to Stage_43, then deleted some files, and then, after an hour of no progress, I rebooted again. This time after my computer rebooted, two RUNDLL notifications came up right at the beginning. The first said, "Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\qhbxmeqh.dll. The specified module could not be found." The second said the same thing except the filename was "dfmtonlo.dll" for that message. I clicked "OK" for both of them since that was my only option. I also noticed that a notepad file had somehow been created on the desktop. It is titled, "catchme.log" and... I was going to copy and paste it here, but it has now somehow disappeared...

So, third time's a charm, right? I ran ComboFix again and it completed all stages, deleted a lot more things, and then rebooted windows on its own. After rebooting, the exact same two RUNDLL notifications appeared and I clicked "OK". It took some time, but ComboFix finally prepared a log. The third scan took approximately 22 minutes to complete entirely.

    Here is my ComboFix Log:

Once saved, referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe, and post back the resulting report along with a Hijackthis log..

Additonally, ComboFix will generate a zipped file on your desktop called Submit [Date Time].zip

    Please submit this file to:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=4

Please include a link to this topic in the message.

A few FYI things to note: Before I received your response, Symantec notified me of two more Trojan.Vundo filenames it had deleted. When I ran ComboFix this time, it got to the screen where it said it was preparing a report and did not progress for 30 minutes, so I manually rebooted (because the rest of my desktop had disappeared and I couldn't do anything else). When it rebooted, there were no RUNDLL notifications this time and both the log and .zip files had both been created.

I submitted the .zip file as per your request and was given the following response, "Your file was successfully submitted. Please let the user helping you know that you have submitted the file."

Here is my new ComboFix log:

    Hi, sneveu :)

Files submitted resulted negative for malware. The log results from Combofix are incomplete. Lets use an alternate method.

    1. Please download The Avenger2 by Swandog46 to your Desktop.

Please re-open HijackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Rename.exe" (User 'SYSTEM')
    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Rename.exe" (User 'Default user')

Now close all windows and browsers, other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

    Close Hijackthis.
    • Right click on the Avenger.zip folder and select "Extract All..."
    • Follow the prompts and extract the avenger folder to your desktop
    2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

    3. Now, open the avenger folder and start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon.
    • Right click on the window under Input script here:, and select Paste.
    • You can also Paste the text copied to the clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
    • Click on Execute
    • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
    4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
    • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Delete", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
    • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
    • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
    • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
    5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply

[IMG]Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) from here or here to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
    1. Close all applications and windows.
    2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
    3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
    4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of both, the main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply.
If the files are too long, attach them to a reply:
    1. Scroll down and click the [Manage Attachments] button
    2. Browse to the following folder:
      • C:\Deckard\System Scanner
    3. Click Upload to upload these files one by one
    4. Submit your reply
    .

That should produce a report on your desktop, Report.txt. Post its contents in your next reply.

    Lets check for remnants:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

    • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a Hijackthis log..

    Hi, sneveu :)

I don't recognize the contents of the C:\Inetpub folder. Please remove the C:\Program Files\Ycvv and C:\WINDOWS\S2Vsc2V5 folders, and if not recognized, the C:\Inetpub

The rest looks clear. How is the computer doing?

Well, I've noticed that Firefox opens much quicker today, which is great! :)

I haven't had any unwanted pop-ups or symantec notifications today either. I did run an Ad-Aware 2007 quick scan, which only found some tracking cookies (nothing critical), and a spyware doctor intelli-scan, which found only 9 total infections including something called "Trojan.General" but everything was only a Low threat. So, it seems like the worst of it is gone (I hope for good!).

Do you have any suggestions for things I should do or scans I should run daily or weekly to prevent malware and adware in the future (besides the obvious don't use P2P programs or click on links in spam e-mails, etc.)? I have symantec, ad-aware, and spyware doctor all on my computer. Is it fine to use all three (I recall reading somewhere you should only have one anti-virus software that you use, but I do not know if that's a true fact or not). Also, is the windows firewall good enough or do you suggest using something else (I have heard positive remarks about the comodo firewall, but again I don't know much about it or if I would have to disable my windows firewall to use another firewall)?

    Hi, sneveu :)

It is not recommended to have more that one antivirus. The same rule applies to firewalls. In your position, Symantec takes over and provides both services. There is no need to add an antivirus or an additional firewall.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

    (Windows XP)

    1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    2. Reboot.

    3. Turn ON System Restore.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK..

Since the tools we used to scan the computer, as well as tools to delete files and folders, are no longer needed, they should be removed, as well as the folders created by these tools.

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and tools used in the removal of malware
    • Click START then RUN
    • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
Create a Restore point (If the above process fails):
    1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore.
    2. In the System Restore dialog box, click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
    3. Type a description for your restore point, such as "After Cleanup", then click Create.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
    1. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
    2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
    3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
    4. ZonedOut + IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
    5. CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
    6. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
    7. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
    8. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)
    9. ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.
    10. Recovery Console - Recent trends appear to indicate that future infections will include attacks to the boot sector of the computer. The installation of the Recovery Console in the computer will be our only defense against this threat. For more information and steps to install the Recovery Console see This Article. Should you need assistance in installing the Recovery Console, please do not hesitate to ask.
    11. Read and follow the suggestions given at this web site by Miekiemoes http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html .
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.
