I'm running Win 95 and OE 5 with a dial-up connection.

Shortly after I launch OE I get the following message:

"This program has performed an illegal operation and will
be shut down. Detail: MSIMN caused an exception C0000006H
in module DIRECTDB.DLL at 0137:5f5837be." (There's more --
I will post if it might help)

If I don't close this dialog box, I can read my e-mail,
but I can't move or delete it. I haven't tried sending,
yet.

It also appears that I'm receiving multiple copies (up to
5) of incoming mail.

I tried renaming the folders.dbx file and relaunching OE,
as suggested in one of MS's support docs. When I did this,
I got the error msg before the app even came up.

I also tried re-downloading the latest (5.5) version of OE for Win 95, but no luck there either.

One final thing: In the folder that contains all the .dbx
files is a CLEANUP.LOG file that shows that background
cleanup has been performed on the first 4 e-mail folders,
but no more. There is an entry for each time I have tried
to launch OE.

I'm pretty ignorant with these kinds of problems and would
be ever so grateful if anyone might be able to provide any
help with this problem.

Dear Eddie,

Thanks for taking the time to read my post and respond.

I did a search for the MESSAGES.ODS file and it was not found.

Could this be my problem? I'm pretty careful, so I don't think I could've deleted it. My recycle bin is empty and I haven't emptied it recently.

If it is, what can I do to get "a" MESSAGES.ODS file out there without losing any of my existing e-Mails?

Thanks again.

Well, after futzing with it some more last night, I stumbled on the problem. The DELETED.DBX folder had somehow gotten corrupted.

I was checking the properties of all the .dbx files to make sure none were read-only, and when I clicked on the deleted.dbx file, I got the same "Illegal Operation" error msg and it even shut down my file manager.

So, I deleted the DELETED.DBX file, restarted OE, and it came up with no trouble.

How the file got corrupted, who knows...

Anyway, thanks for listening everyone.

This is a great forum!
