The main infection here is the peper trojan and you will have to get an Internet connection to eradicate it as the removal tool must be run while connected to the Internet.

We can do some cleanup first though and then take the computer on-line to finish up.

Go to Control Panel - Add/Remove programs and remove if there:

Alset (Help Express)
ClockSync

Rescan with Hijack This, close all browser windows except Hijack This, put a check mark beside these entries and click “fix checked”.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [5QEKE7T5NG9WG2] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Gzb25X.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [HELPEXP.EXE] C:\Program Files\Alset\HelpExpress\default\Client\HelpExp.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [emsw.exe] C:\WINDOWS\emsw.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Ottt] C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\default\Application Data\rrai.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ClockSync] C:\PROGRA~1\CLOCKS~1\Sync.exe /q

O8 - Extra context menu item: Coupons - file://C:\Program Files\couponsandoffers\System\Temp\couponsandoffers_script0.htm

O9 - Extra button: Dell Home - {08DCFC6C-B6E4-480C-95A4-FC64F37B787E} - http://www.dellnet.com (file missing) (HKCU)

Then boot to safe mode (see how below), locate and delete these files and/or folders:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Gzb25X.exe - file
C:\Program Files\Alset - folder
C:\WINDOWS\emsw.exe - folder
C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\default\Application Data\rrai.exe - file
C:\PROGRA~1\CLOCKSYNC - folder
C:\Program Files\couponsandoffers - folder

How to restart to safe mode:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

These files may be hidden so please do this:
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
Click Start, Programs and Accessories and open Windows Explorer.
Select a hard drive from the left hand side of the Windows Explorer window.
Select View the Entire contents of this drive

Run this uninstaller to get rid of the peper.a trojan:

http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/uninst.exe

*Note: Just click on the uninst.exe and let it run. When it is finished it will just close. There will be no dialogue. Also, you must be connected to the internet for the uninstaller to be effective.

Then reboot and post another log please.

OK, that's fine.

The peper uninstaller is a tool that just runs and it will only do so when connected to the Internet.

LSP fix will fit onto a floppy. Please download it and run it on the infected computer. It may retore the Internet connection. Peper is still present in the log.

Download the LSP Fix and run it. Click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox. (Don't do anything else)

Then click Finish.

http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm

If you do get the connection back, try running the peper installer.

Let me know how it goes please.

ok ran the lsp fix as instructed, it gave me a little pop up saying 0 things were removed/renumbered.still cant open any web pages.
would it be easyer to just reformat and do a fresh install of windows ME? she has all the disks to do so,just wanted me to try to help her first befor going that route.
also if a clean install is the next step, would i need to save her work docs on a disk or will they still be there after ?

oh almost forgot to add,I think its a problem with IE.when i try to update ADaware it takes a few mins trying to connect then it tells me a new def list is available.i click on the DL and it gets to 5% then sends the error could not install def file please try again

Let's try repairing IE first.

To access this repair tool you should follow these steps:

1) Click on Start, then click on Settings, and then click on Control Panel.
2) Once the control panel window is open double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
3) You will now see a screen that shows a listing of all installed programs on your computer. Scroll down till you see Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools.
4) Double-click this entry and a screen will appear asking what you would like to do.
5) Select the option to Repair Internet Explorer and press the OK button.
6) Then press the Yes key to begin the process.
7) When it is completed reboot your computer.

Rescan with Hijack This and fixthis entry:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = about:blank

We could try a winsock repair. I don't know if this will fit onto a floppy but I think so.

1.) Download http://www.tacktech.com/pub/winsockfix/WinsockFix.zip. (by: Option^Explicit) or http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
2.) UnZip WinsockFix.zip (Pay close attention to where the file is extracted to.)
3.) Run WinsockFix.exe.
4.) Click the Fix button.

Let me know how it goes.

Great!

I just noticed your version of Hijack This is slightly outdated so it would be a good idea to post one more log from the new version just to be sure all is fine.

You can get it here:

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Then, if all is OK, we'll have you create a new system restore point.

I would remove these with Hijack This:

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

Now you should turn system restore off to flush out all previous restore points and then turn it back on and create a new restore point:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001012513122239?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

I also recommend downloading SPYWAREBLASTER & SPYWAREGUARD, for added protection.
