When attempting to type in MS Word 2000 on win98 platform all of the characters are covered by a growing block of black. Temporary relief of this is accomplished by changing format background; but this doesn't last too long. Print preview shows the entire page blacked out. I'm new to MS Word 2000 and don't have the slightest idea what's up.

have you ever been able to use that particular application on that particular machine before? Or did it just 'appear', as windows based apps are so fond of doing?

Dreamboat's suggestion is the most common cure for many word ailments! It sounds kinda like you may be typing into a form field

Actually, Rollin, it sounds like the Normal style has picked up shading. :)

Thank You All for your prompt attention. The phenomena did appear out of nowhere. I will have normal.dot deleted and report back in a day or two. The computer in question is twenty-two hundred miles away from me in my girlfriends apartment. I witnessed the situation while visiting last week. This pesky problem takes it's toll on our nightly telephone agenda. Again Thank You All

My apologies for taking so long to get back. I've had severe difficulties with my own system. To bring matters up to date, and close this thread, making a long story short, my girlfriend upgraded to WindowsXP and the latest MS Office Suite. I'll never know what was going on. Again many thanks to all.
