Hello,

I inherited my desktop PC and I'm trying to "clean" it of programs I don't use. When I remove programs, I seem to have undesired random effects i.e. windows components/utilities disappear, files disappear, programs won't open. So far, I've only uninstalled known programs I definitely don't use. There are also quite a few programs that show up in the "add or remove program" that I don't know what the heck they are.

#1 I would appreciate any input regarding this matter.
#2 Does anyone have suggestions on how to learn more about the function of the programs on one's computer and how they may or may not be necessary? I've had difficultly finding info on this.

Thank you, George

You might try going systematically through this list of items to find those starting when your pc boots.

http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

You might then like to go here :

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

And download Hijack This.

Install it in it's own folder ( as it creates backups each time you run it.)

Run the program.

Select Scan and create logfile.

Save the logfile as a text file on your desktop - and then copy / paste it here in your next post.

Do not delete anything found by Hijack This just yet.

It may or may not be harmful applications running that are causing you problems.

Click the warning triangle at the top of this thread, and ask for the thread to be moved to the Security Forum so you can receive help with what needs to be deleted.

I've requested this thread to be moved t the security forum.

What is the method of finding the items that are starting on my PC when it boots? So I can compare them to the list on http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

Meanwhile, here is my Hijack This log file

You can start by removing these via Add/Remove programs:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
Viewpoint

Then you can decide if you want to keep the others in the list.

You should trim down your start-ups as there are too many running. You can research them at these sites and if they aren’t required at start-up then you can uncheck them in msconfig via Start - Run - type msconfig click OK and then click on the start-up tab.

Thanks, Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner.

Followed your suggestions. Worked great. Do you think it's okay to get rid of a lot of these programs that I don't use. And what about the many Windows (hotfix, updates, security) entries? Reply at your convenience. Thanks much. George

Sorry, one more thing. Do you see any reason why I can't delete programs from the registry (i.e. through advanced optimizer). I have a few programs that when I try to uninstall, I get an error message saying it doesn't exist or cannot find the file.

All of the Windows updates need to remain as they patch vulnerabilities and if you remove them, you will leave the system open for infection.

I wouldn't try uninstalling programs via the registry unless you know what you're doing. If they aren't listed in Add/Remove programs, open their folders and see if they have an uninstaller that you can run.
