Can you look at this log file and tell me what I should delete. Also, I would like to get rid of anything AOL related and McAfee related. Also, when I shut down the computer, just before it shuts off, some words appear for maybe 1/10 of a second - sometimes. Can't tell what it reads it's so quick. Is there a way to log this finale screen to see what it says on shutdown?

Followed your suggestions (golferbob) and changed sys resources free from 47% to 55%. Was just wondering how to log or view existing log of shutdown to see what that finale screen says. Sometime it shows and sometimes not. It is so quick, maybe 1/10 second. Some sort of message saying something.

Other than:

ScanRegistry
SystemTray
StateMgr
Antivirus program entries
Firewall program entries

Windows ME needs to have very few other programs running in the background. I'll assist you with getting the obvious ones disabled from running.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - Startup(tab). Remove the checkmark from:

pchschd.exe

taskmon.exe

loadpowerprofile
(both entries with that name)

realplay.exe

loadqm.exe

msnappau.exe

mstask.exe

kb891711.exe

osa9.exe

(Note: If findfast.exe or microsoft office are listed, uncheck them too)

Once you're done, click Apply - OK, then reboot. When the window appears during reboot and warns you about using selective startup mode, ignore the message. Place a checkmark in it, then click OK.

----------------------------------------------------------------

After you've done the above, run another scan with HijackThis, then post a new log here.

----------------------------------------------------------------

By the way, wanting to get rid of everything that's related to AOL and McAfee is a good idea.

This should get rid of some of that AOL and McAfee crap that you want to get rid of.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Go back into the MSCONFIG "Startup" tab, then remove the checkmark from:

Ati2cwxx.exe

Atiptaxx.exe

Ati2evxx.exe
(Note: If you lost any functions for your ATI video card, recheck them and then reboot. I pretty much doubt that you'll need them though. I had an ATI Radeon video card in both desktops and have them all unchecked)

Apply the change afterwards, then reboot.

---------------------------------------------------------------

After you've done the above, post a new log here.

Without knowing your computer's configuration and what other hardware is attached to it, I don't want to trim down the startup list anymore. What I suggest you do is go to this site and make use of the "Search" block. Type in each entry in the startup list, one at a time, then click Search. It'll tell you what the entry is so you can decide whether to uncheck and disable it or not. You don't want to uncheck and disable

ScanRegistry
SystemTray
StateMgr
Antivirus program entries
Firewall programs entries

As far as AOL and McAfee is concerned, try to clean out as much of it as you can.

Go into C:\Program Files and make sure no folders are still there that have the name

McAfee
VirusScan
America Online
AOL

If there is, right-click each one, then click Delete - Yes.

Click Start - Run, type in REGEDIT and then click OK. This will open the registry editor.

Click the + in

HKEY_CURRENT_USER - Software
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - Software

In the Software sub-menu of both, look for any folders with the same names as above. If any are present, right-click each one, then click Delete - Yes. Reboot afterwards.

Thanks flavallee,
Did as you suggested. A lot in there for Norton and pretty much the rest was system stuff - two startups were not listed - PCFMGR.EXE and ICONSPY.EXE. Do you know anything about these? I guess I could turn them off and see what happens.

Neither the SYSINFO.ORG startup database site nor the IAMNOTAGEEK.COM startup database site have either one of them listed.

Go ahead and uncheck them and run your computer for awhile. You should know soon enough whether you need them or not.
