Does this registry key contain a value?

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\windows\WindowsUpdate
    WUServer REG_SZ

So I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that you take your laptop to work and connect to a corporate LAN?

If you do, you may be getting a group policy for WSUS, which buggars up the Windows Update applet for Vista. Once you get this policy, you can no longer visit the Windows Update/Microsoft Update website.

    (Doh.)

You can fix it by whacking the policy, but a more permanant solution would be to update to the v7 WUMU client.

Manually download the v7 WUMU client and install it.

    http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

Run the WindowsUpdate again. You will see a new hyperlink in the Windows Update applet to 'check for updates directly from the Microsoft Website' or something very similar. Try that link if the normal process doesn't work.

    More (mostly useless) information:

The error you're reporting translates to 0x8000FFFF E_UNEXPECTED in the error code list. Which isn't very helpful.

    OK I must be confused.

You're trying to get updates in Vista (something I know a LOT about), or you're trying to update TO Windows Vista (something I know much less about).

The log in question is c:\windows\windowsupdate.log.

However, lets be clear on exactly what you're trying to do first. Are you trying to update Vista with WindowsUpdate, or are you doing something else?

    NO
as i said twice earlier... Ive just installed Windows Vista Ultimate on my ACER 5051
after completion of installtion ive gone to update Windows.. To bring it up to date with hotfixes and patches..
when i try to it displays that error ERROR CODE:8000FFFF
so ive downloaded that update and tried to install it and it says the exact same error....
Also when I checked registry there was no entry like you asked and no Windows Update folder in C:/windows

So to recap, you are using Windows Update in Vista.

    You ARE generating a WindowsUpdate.log. <edit>

And you're throwing ERROR CODE:8000FFFF (I assume in the Windows Update applet)?

That's very interesting. At which point do you get the error? Does it even attempt to scan?
