I'm currently using a very old version of firefox (7.0.1) so thought to upgrade the browser. I'v downloaded firefox 18.0.2 on my system but do not know how to install it now. Please can someone tell me the command line to be used to install it. It is a TAR BALL archive saved in the download folder, i.e. home/mohit/downloads/firefox-18.0.2.tar.bz2

Please tell me how to install any package from a location of my system; and
how to install directly from the internet; and also
how to upgrade any package on my system.

My Operating System is Ubuntu 11.10

I downloaded TSG SysInfo but could'nt run it.. please also tell how to run a .exe program on Ubuntu.

    Thanks in advance.. :)

    sudo apt-get udate
    sudo apt-get install firefox

    .exe files are for Windows.

But that will again download the package from the web. I had already downloaded the package, its a tar ball archive. Can't it be used?? Can't we install a package that we had downloaded already and saved on the hard disk??

The one you've downloaded is outdated.

Just open Synaptic Package Manager and type "firefox".

It'll give you the latest version in the Ubuntu repositories.
