Hi guys. I bought a no name 2gb usb flash drive recently on a visit to China. Initially my pc was able to recognize it and I was able to view properties and see the drive size of 1.95gb. I downloaded a sample file and everything seemed fine, but when I next used it I received a response " please insert a disc into drive G ". I went to device manager and found generic usb flash drive, it said the device was working properly. I uninstalled it and plugged in flash drive again. It was then recognized again and got the response "hardware installed and ready for use", but again could not access the drive. I tried the website of the company that manufactured it but no driver downloads were available. Any ideas or will I have to throw this hardware out?

Good Afternoon tongpo, you might try this Recovery Manager program, it is very useful with flash drives.
    http://vaiosoft.com/products/recoverymanager.html
If you are able to recover the information with it, try reformatting with it and it may recover.

With these flashdrves, don't leave them in your machine longer than neccessary, they do develop heat and this is ungood for them.
I must admit your situation sounds somewhat as though you drive has become "past tense".
    qldit.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

    "DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

    Unplug ALL USB devices.
    Open Device Manager.
    View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify the instructions.

Good Afternoon tongpo, a nice funeral pyre, stack it up and say the words to the great computer god as the drive transends this world.

The sit down with a couple of nice cold sixpacks of Foster's and enjoy having had the use of this wonderful device for however long.

If you run out of six-packs you may need a couple more, this ritual must be done correctly.
The drive will thank you for it.

You may end up in the "clink" for polluting the atmosphere and abusing the law but duty is mandatory.

    Sympathy and condolences, qldit.
