Go in to control panel, Admin Tools, Computer Management and assign it a drive letter.

You need to partition and format it as well.

Obviously, it's formatted and partitioned, or you couldn't list the files on it. It's curious that it doesn't show up in My Computer, could you have been tinkering with the XP TweakUI program and disabled the view of some drives in My Computer?

It may just be that it has never been assigned a drive letter....and has one in mind it wants to use which is not available. ;)

I didn't see the "dir" list of files...that is strange.

WhitPhil, why are you providing a link to the Report Post feature?

    thank you for your reply,
this is all ok but you say partition & format the drive, not saying that you are wrong but i will try it as a last resort, and i do thank you for your help.

I fancy cybertech's idea is very worth trying first thx cyb.

given cybertech's reply some thought and i would like to add something neglected to say the first time,
The PC in question has ne serial ports (dell) so i had a serail-USB adapter made and that works
fine now, that was also added after the USB drive.
gona try it tomorrow (monday) and i will report back.

    THX all

Just blind I guess. Saved the shortcut from the Report Post, instead of the actual Post!!!!

    The REAL suggestion

BTW I don't see any reason why one should have to be formatting a Memory Stick to make it work. Well, especially since it obviously does work, it just isn't being seen natively by Windows.

    Also, a Registry Tweak?
