I'm using a P4 with XP Pro SP2 installed. I use ZASS for my firewall and virus protection, and run Adaware and Spybot religiously to check for spyware.

A few days ago I found that I could not log in to any of the 3 accounts I have set up. After clicking on the user icon, the right user background screen would load, and then I go back to the log-on screen and Windows says "saving your settings".

Starting the computer in Safe mode lets me log into my Admin account. I also managed to create a new user account from here, but cannot log into that one either, I get the same reaction as trying to do a login from the normal screen.

I have run all sorts of virus checkers and they have basically come up clean. Now I need some serious help as I'd hate to have to reinstall Windows!

I tried to do a screenshot of startup items from MSConfig but the function wouldn't work; not sure if it's because I'm in Safe mode or if MSConfig won't let you do it. So i'm relaying the items here -

VBPTASK - Farstone System restore utility
    imontray
    igfxtray
    hkcmd
    bpcable - cable login
    bpumTray - cable tray icon
    zlclient - ZoneAlarm
    ctfmon
    WinZip Quick Pick

    Maybe that sheds some light.

Do you have a good system restore point that you could roll back to?

If not, I see you have the program Restore It. Did you try that?

Both those options are no go.

My System Restore was off all this time, I think I disabled it to install an anti-spy program a while ago and forgot to re-enable it. And in Safe mode you can't enable it.

Restore It is a program that runs when my computer starts but it only goes back 1 day and my problem is older than that.

So it's back to square one...

Thanks anyway. I take it the HJT log didn't show anything promising then?

It's possible but that's an old article referring to Ad-Aware 6. We can check that key in the registry though, to be sure.

In Registry Editor (Start - Run... regedit), navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Find the "Userinit" key in the right pane. What does it say beside REG_SZ on that some line under the column called "data"?

There's nothing malicious showing in the HijackThis log but it looks like you may have some items unchecked in msconfig. If that's the case, would you go to msconfig, check everything that's there and post a new log please.

    OK, found the registry entry.
    It says C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe

Now I will set all my config switches and do another HJT log.

My old msconfig settings are as follows -

VBPTASK - Farstone System restore utility
    imontray
    igfxtray
    hkcmd
    bpcable - cable login
    bpumTray - cable tray icon
    zlclient - ZoneAlarm
    ctfmon
    WinZip Quick Pick

    the new ones are -

    THGuard
    SpySweeper
    SpyCatcher
    SMax4PnP
    Smax4
    NeroCheck
    dumprep 0 -k
    NULL
    FusionRc
    FusionHdtvTray
    RoboTaskBarIcon
    palstart
    SpyCatcher Protector
    Scheduler
and there is also a completely blank line. The box is ticked but there is no item on the line and no command but there is a startup location given.
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
(same as most of the other entries actually)

    and the HJT log says

LetÂ’s take a look at a start-up log from HijackThis. Open HijackThis.
Click on Open Misc Tools Section
Make sure that both boxes beside "Generate StartupList Log" are checked:
    • List all minor sections(Full)
    • List Empty Sections(Complete)
    Click Generate StartupList Log.
    Click Yes at the prompt.
It will open a text file. Please copy the entire contents of that page and paste it here.
