Solved: Very slow boot

    I have a used corporate laptop. It basically works great. It has the Windows XP service Pack 2 operating system. When I boot the desktop comes up right away. The Start Menu and icons take their own sweet time. I mean the thing can go to the standbye or sleep mode while I wait. If I wake it the icons and Start Menu eventually appear. This happens more often than not.

    I have defragmented the disk and cleared all temporary files. I do not currently have it on a LAN network and don't see that as part of this machine's routine. I did disable the LAN connection thinking that might solve the problem. It didn't. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Maybe a hijackthis log will show us something amiss...

    Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
    Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
    Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.

    Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
    Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
    Click Edit > Select All> Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
    Paste the log in your next reply.

    DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

    The laptop probalby belongs to a domain? When you try to log on, it's looking for the domain. Take it out of the domain, I seriously doubt you have any malware that is causing this, as your first statement was "I have a used corporate laptop...".

    Right click My Computer, click on properties, then Computer Name, click on change. In the bottom box you will see if it's in a domain or workgroup, if it's in a domain, take it out by clicking the raido button for workgroup, give the workgroup a name, and then reboot.

    As a side note - Are you a security expert for the forum The Hound? I got told to not tell anyone to do what you did, because I was...the forum has security experts, if they see something that needs their attention, they will move it and answer, we're not supposed to. :)

    The Hijack Log I just posted was from my desktop not the laptop! Doh!!! My laptop is not in a wireless network and isn't in a LAN.

    Got any suggestions? I'm a dullard tonight.

    But is it in a domain? Did you check where I asked you to check? You don't have to be on a netowrk to be a part of a domain...

    @skydawg--I do not analyze hijackthis logs. Ever. Nor do I troubleshoot malware issues. When I suggest that a hijackthis log be posted, you'll find that the only suggestion I make about the contents is to be patient until a qualified expert makes decisions.

    My interest in hijackthis logs posted on this forum is limited to the number of applications like media players and auto=updaters in the startup group. I don't pretend to be a malware expert, nor do I claim expertise in hijackthis analysis.

    I did a change and named the workgroup. I restarted and ran into the same problem.

    Rocky-to avoid any confusion, forget the hjt log, and let's try this instead.

    Click start, run, type msconfig , click ok.

    On the General tab, click 'selective startup', and on the startup tab, untick all except your security programs (and a touchpad driver if you use it).

    Click apply, ok, and reboot.

    On rebooting, if you're quicker (you probably will be), put ticks back in boxes...open the associated applications, and set their options to NOT run on startup.

    @The Hound...well, I was just letting you know, not being a jerk, I did the same thing you did and got a whole post from a mod quoting rules and all...was just a friendly warning, the big thing was if you post, the security mods won't see it as fast and can't answer as fast as they normally would...up to you though, like I said, just a friendly note. :)

    @Rocky Okay, I misread your first post, probably time for me to go to bed...thought you were talking about logging in, not the start menu, wow, what a miss. But, now that I read it, when you click on start, either click ctrl+alt+del and bring up task manager or right click the task bar - task manager - and look and see in the processes tab what is eating up your Memory and CPU, you can click on the category to sort by what is using the most CPU and memory.

    I've followed your advice, and the problem is solved. I've booted cold rather than done a restart. Done it three times. Each time the start menu and icons pop right on up.
