    Hello :D

I've been having internet issues on my HP Pavilion dv9000. The wired connection to my modem comes up as unidentified. This happens spontaneously, either while it's been working or upon log in. I want to fix this problem permanently, if possible. I've tried many solutions to no avail, but I'm thinking if I want this problem fixed, to run through them all again. Open to anything that's had any success rate regarding this problem. Thanks!

Sorry for the Virtual Box adapter showing up...the connection I'm having issues with is my wired LAN...it doesn't have a default gateway.

    Sorry for the mix-up .

I still have the issue though, heh.

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection. If it's this connection, it's because either the network cable is bad, or the connection to the router/switch is.

Note that the address starts with 169.254. That's an address (called an Automatic Private IP address, or APIPA) automatically assigned because you have the port set to automatically get an IP address via DHCP, but no server (read, your router) is available. Windows will automatically keep trying to get an address while it has the APIPA one.

Try changing out your network cable, or plugging in the cable to a known good port. Don't bother trying to fix the connection via Windows because it isn't broken. It's doing exactly what is supposed to do.

Yes, that was the connection I'm having issues with. :)
I used a different ethernet cable but that didn't fix the problem, and plugging it into another known working port didn't work either.

If additional info regarding the computer will help solve the problem or locate the cause of this little predicament, feel free to ask.

The NIC may be having difficulty auto negotiating with whatever you are connecting to, especially if that is an older unit. In Device Manager right click on the ethernet adapter - Properties - Advanced - look for the "speed and duplex" property - try a couple different ones, starting with 100 Mbps full duplex and 10 Mbps full duplex.

EDIT: Don't know if this'll help, my modem is a 2wire 1701-HG. It's pretty dated so I'm just wondering if that'd be an issue.

As I logged into my computer, it turns out my LAN is working, but I'm very certain it's one of those miracle windows of uptime. I'm posting an ipconfig while my wired connection works just in case it helps identify the problem. :)

Also, will do on the speed and duplex settings suggestion. I'm pretty sure in the past I had it set to something besides Auto Negotiation, following advice from the WoW forums. :p

The connection is Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection.

The VirtualBox thingy isn't in the good ipconfig /all. I'm still not completely convinced that it is not somehow negatively impacting the ethernet connection.

I took it out because I'm an idiot :x.
After tinkering with the settings I have the NIC set to 10mbps full duplex, and so far no problems. I'll mark this as solved for now, if problems arise again I'll come back. But before I go I'll let you know I'm going to upgrade Virtual Box :).

Thanks for all your help (y)

Turns out tinkering with the speed/duplex settings was only a band-aid. Changing it won't fix the problem anymore. The network comes up as unidentified once more. :(

Tried safe mode w/ networking, and the wired LAN connection still came up as unidentified.

Yes. And I thought that the wounded device was the router. But it may be the NIC. Let's see the ipconfig /all again.

Need I mention that the VirtualBox is back, and that I am still not convinced that it is not playing games with the ethernet? :)

You could try another band-aid--assign a static IP configuration to the ethernet. If the NIC is dying that sometimes buys some more time.

The reason it was gone was because I removed it to try and avoid confusion over which Network I was referring to, which I see now was a horrible decision on my part.

Two things I will do before posting again:
    Remove Virtual Box.
    Assign a static IP.

I've tried assigning static IPs before with no results however :(
