Please could you advise on a problem suddenly started on my computer when I start it up. It runs on Windows Vista Home Premium.
After the initial Toshiba screen a black one appears with several loud bleeps. It tells me I can either choose to open the operating system, or do a Memory Diagnostic test (which is OK)
When I allow it to start up the initial reaction on the desk top is for the programme icons to fail to operate. A few minutes later pressing any icon opens a window for the icon in the top LH corner of the screen e.g. telling me the contents of the recycle bin if that is the icon, or my downloads if I move that icon to the top LH corner.
A little later I can open programmes, eg Word by right mouse button, and press open but then if I try to open a file it insists in taking the top one of the list and highlighting it.
After about ten minutes it settles down and operates normally.
I have tried System Restore to no avail, also sending it to the last known good configuration, and putting it in debugging mode again with no success.
Please can you advise how to resolve this, is it likely to be a virus (I am running Avast and a scan by that says there is no virus) or is there a simpler solution. I would welcome your help please. I am not anxious to wipe all by reinstalling Windows.
