I've got a laptop here that won't boot up Vista. I can load safe mode, though it takes a long while and seems to hang at crcdisk.sys.

Model: Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile V5535
    OS: Vista Basic (SP2) (32-bit)

I can't do a system restore or a reinstall. I started to run chkdsk /r but had to stop it after four hours at 43%. After this Vista did load and I was able to log on normally, however, when I restarted the problem reappeared.

I ran chkdsk /f and again this changed the problem a little: this time the laptop reached the login screen (after several minutes) but it then hung when logging on. Safe mode still loads but it takes much longer.

Any help greatly appreciated - thanks!

Hi, if you can log into through safe mode Install Malwarebytes
    >Update it.
    >Scan with it.
    >Restart.

    Keep us posted.

Couldn't update it before scanning - no internet - but it blasted ~250 trojans from the registry and starts now! (250!! AVG had discovered exactly none.)

    Thanks (y)

    Update:

Just re-enabled wireless in the bios (had disabled it earlier today) and now have this message:

SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 4: ST980811AS-(S1)
WARNING: Immediately back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent.
    Press F1 to continue.

    Woe. Not so encouraging. :(

It's a friend's laptop - he said he doesn't mind if everything gets wiped, but he doesn't want to pay out for new software or hardware. This one only ran out of (1 year) warranty a week ago.

Ah well. Thanks for all your help - I'll remark this thread 'solved' as you did in fact solve the original issue! :)
