Our printer should have an odometer....

Is there any way to tell besides trial and error whether the original printer cable needs replacing or the printer needs replacing?

You could try looking in the manual or the manufacturer's homepage to see if you can run a test page from the printer's buttons.

If you can get that to work the cable would be the next suspect.

Let us know if you get that to work.

The test page would not print--the cartridge carrier seemed hung up. We had the printer for 3 years and used it non-stop. We replaced it this afternoon with a HP.

    Thanks for your help!
