Looks like I have become another member of the w32.desktophijack. I have read some of the other forums, but didn't know if fixing the problem is specific to each computer. Please help.

hi, welcome to TSG.

Download the pocket killbox

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php

* Click here to download smitRem.zip.

http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/click counter/click.php?id=1

* Save the file to your desktop.
* Unzip smitRem.zip to extract the two files it contains.
* Do not do anything with it yet. You will run the RunThis.bat file later in safe mode.

* Go here to download CCleaner.

http://www.ccleaner.com/

* Install CCleaner
* Launch CCleaner and look in the upper right corner and click on the "Options" button.
* Click "Advanced" and remove the check by "Only delete files in Windows temp folders older than 48 hours".
* Click OK
* Do not run CCleaner yet. You will run it later in safe mode.

* Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite.

http://www.ewido.net/en/

* Install ewido.
* During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
* Launch ewido
* It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
* On the left side of the main screen click update
* Click on Start and let it update.
* DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

* Click here for info on how to boot to safe mode if you don't already know how.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

* Now copy these instructions to notepad and save them to your desktop. You will need them to refer to in safe mode.

* Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

* Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Delete on
Reboot. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each
of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has
the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file.
It will ask for confimation to delete the file on next reboot. Click
Yes. It will then ask if you want to reboot now. Click No. Continue
with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of
these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box. Then click yes
to reboot after you entered the last one.

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not
exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you
don't miss any.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\intel32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mpka.dll

* Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

* Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner
* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop

* Start Ccleaner and click Run Cleaner

* Go to Control Panel > Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then
click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

* Next go to Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click
the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" you
should see an entry checked called something like "Security info" or similar.
If it is there, select that entry and click the "Delete" button. Click OK
then Apply and OK.

* Restart back into Windows normally now.

* Run ActiveScan online virus scan here

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.
- Save the results from the scan!

After doing all that, you now ned to run these tools to get rid of the Spse infection.

download Cwshredder from

http://www.soft32.com/download_19014.html

Download 'SpSeHjfix'. to the desktop and then
right click a blank part of desktop & select new folder, call it spfix
unzip the file into that folder

http://www.derbilk.de/404.html

Disconnect from the net and Close ALL OPEN PROGRAMS.
Run 'SpSeHjfix'. and click on "Start Disinfection".
When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process.
The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage

Warning Note: On a few occasions it has been reported that after using the
SPSEHjfix you cannot open Internet Explorer. To fix this, go into Control
Panel >Internet Options >Programs & press reset web settings, then you can
set your home page to what you want on the general tab.

Now run CWShredder - Hit The FIX button!

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log and the log that was created by 'SpSeHjfix'.
and the ewido and active scan logs

upload this file to this site below to seee if it's legitimate

C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.2\Tools\Process Viewer\ProcessViewer.exe

http://virusscan.jotti.org/

go to this site and download these tools and once you get both
adaware Se 1.6 and spybot, update both of them.

Set adaware to do a full system scan and deselect, "search for neglible risk
entries". Click next to start the scan. Delete everything adaware finds.

reboot and now run spybot

Spybot: Search and destroy.

Delete what spybot finds marked in red. After updating spybot hit the
immunize button.

reboot again

With CWshredder close all browsers and programmes and select the FIX button.

Go here and download Microsoft Antispyware Beta. First in the top menu click
File then Check for updates to download the definitons updates.

After updating look in the right side of the main window under "Run Quick
Scan Now" and click Spyware scan options. In that window put a tick by Run a
full system scan and then put a check by all three options below that then
click Run Scan now.

When the scan is finished, let it fix anything that it finds (have it
quarantine the items that have that option rather than delete just in case.
It is a beta program and there may be false positives)

Restart your computer.

All tools can be downloaded at the link below and found on that page!

I think we are making progress, but I still have the pop-ups telling me I have a virus. However, the icon that says I have a virus has been removed from the tool bar at the bottom of my desktop and internet explorer now goes to my normal webpage.

Here is my hijack log. Thanks again.

clean log.

what is the name of the icon which reports you have a virus?

does it say where the virus is and what it's name is?

How to show hidden files in Windows

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...Virus Corporate Edition&ver=8.x&osv=&osv_lvl=

you should now turn off system restore to flush out the bad restore points and
then re-enable it and make a new clean restore point.

How to turn off system restore

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];310405

here's some free tools to keep you from getting infected in the future.

to stop reinfection get these two tools, spywareguard and spywareblaster
from

www.javacoolsoftware.com

get the hosts file from here.

put it into :

Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME = C:\WINDOWS

http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

ie-spyad.Puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected

when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

prevX: it stops spyware

http://www.prevx.com/prevxhome.asp

Use spybot's immunize button and use spywareblaster' enable
protection once you update it. you can put spybot's hosts file into
your own and lock it.

I would also suggest switching to Mozilla's firefox browser, it's safer, has a built in pop up blocker, blocks cookies and adds.

Service load: 0% 100%

File: ProcessViewer.exe
Status: MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. Normally programs aren't packed and don't force the sandbox into lengthy emulation. Do realize no scanner issued any warning, the file can very well be harmless. Caution is advised, however.) (Note: this file has been scanned before. Therefore, this file's scan results will not be stored in the database)

The icon no longer appears at the bottom of my desktop.

The only thing I get now is this popup:

Norton Antivirus
Virus Alert
C:\Windows\system32\wininet.dll
W32.desktophijack

ok, thats what I was expecting earlier as this pest affects that file which is legitimate.

do this.

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default,
Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden
files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View
tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also
uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for
known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

How to boot to safe mode

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

You will need to boot to safe mode and navigate to the C:\Windows\System32
folder and rename the infected wininet.dll file to wininet.old then go to the
C:\Windows\System32\dllcache folder and copy the wininet.dll file there then
paste it in the system32 folder replacing the infected one you renamed.
After it has been replaced restart your computer and then delete the
wininet.old file.

post another log and tell me how it went, that should fix it however and Norton should stop nagging you!
