Ahh, sounds like the old 48bit LBA conundrum...

What OS are you installing, if XP what Service Pack version is the installation CD?

Here is some info on 48bit LBA

In that case I suspect the issue is your BIOS not supporting drives larger than 127GB, what is shown in the BIOS about the HDD size?
I dont recommend flashing/updating your BIOS at this point in time. But thats entirely up to you.
    TravelMate4000 Support page is here
    http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/tm_4000.html

You could just live with the 127GB partition and create another partition in the unallocated portion of the HDD using the Disk Management utility

That laptop originally came with XP, what size was the original HDD, 80GB?

Are you sure that old laptop is up to running Windows 7 properly?
What CPU, RAM installed, how about the graphics?

Anyways, I suggest you go into Disk Management and create a partition in the 'Unallocated' portion of the HDD

Not originally it didnt, it originally shipped with XP from the factory, possibly with an option to upgrade to Vista.

Ive told you what to do, go to Disk Management and create a partition in the Unallocated part of the disk space.
I know it's not a perfect solution for you but you have limited options using that old laptop with its BIOS not supporting 48bit LBA mode

With Disk Management open look in the lower pane, where it gives you a graphical representation of your drives and their partitions ;)

what do you mean 'none', none of what exactly?

I think you are going to need a 3rd party partitioning tool
    try this one
    http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm
it may be necessary to boot from the bootable CD you can create with the utility and do your partitioning from there.
