I am able to connect to the internet via Ethernet but am unable to view web pages in IE, FF, or Chrome. The Chrome reply says “This Webpage is not available”. I am able to successfully ping packets from the command line which I believe confirms an internet connection. I have three laptops with a wireless connection that do not have a problem. I am running windows 7 home premium (64 bit) on my desktop. When I run spyware doctor virus scan in IntellI-Scan mode I get a no threats detected result. I have run CCleaner and still get the same result. I have run Hijackthis see results below but I don’t know how to interpret the results? Any suggestions on what I need to do? Thanks in advance

When you ping a domain, does it resolve the name properly? eg. pinging microsoft.com should give:
Can you go to a web page by entering the IP? eg. http://207.46.197.32 should take you to microsoft.com as well.

Click Start > Programs > Accessories > right-click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

In the Command Prompt, type in the bold text, one command after the other, pressing Enter between each one of them:

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults: netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults: netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log

    Reboot the computer.

The last set of instructions from Phantom010 fixed the problem & i now have access to the internet. I will monitor my access and let you know if anything changes. Thanks to all for their assistance with this issue. Can anyone explain what the problem was and what caused it. Is there something I need to do going forward so this does not reoccur? I will wait a day until I list this issue as fixed, unless someone advises me that waiting is not appropriate. Once again many thanks to all.

    You're welcome!

As you can see in this HijackThis entry, there was a chain gap in the LSP (Layered Service Provider). This is a feature of the Microsoft Windows Winsock 2 Provider Interface.

A Layered Service Provider typically handles low-level Internet-related tasks, and data is passed through a chain of these programs on its way to and from the Internet. However, due to bugs in the LSP software or deletion of the software, this chain can get broken, causing the Internet connection to become inaccessible.

Software and sometimes malware are responsible for breaking these chains.
