    Hi Good Peoples,

I have a weird one popping up form time to time. Every once in a while, an IE box pops up that is headed "And and Remove Programs" and in the IE address bar is this address

(IE is not even my browser of choice, I use Firefox as my standard browser.)

I have run Ad-Aware, Spywear Blaster, Spybot, a-squared and nothing appears to be out of the ordinary.

Any ideas of how I can get rid of this annoyance please?

Below is a copy of my Hijack Log

    Very old version

Get HiJack This V1.99.1 http://thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe - double click the DL file and click UNZIP letting it extract to its default folder C:\Program FIles\HiJackThis, run it from there, DO NOT fix anything, post the log here.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
    • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
    • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
    • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
    • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
    • You will first be presented with a warning and a list of forums to seek help at.
      it should look like this
    • At this point press enter one time.
    • Next you will see:
    • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
      • C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtss.dll
    • Press Enter,
    • Next you will see:
    • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
      • C:\WINDOWS\system32\sstwa.*
If you have a script blocker running, you may get a warning about a malicious script. Allow the script to run. It is not malicious.

    • The fix will run then HijackThis will open.
    • In HijackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

      • O2 - BHO: ATLDistrib Object - {93C6313C-9DB4-4694-8BD0-E378C573A9AD} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtss.dll

        O20 - Winlogon Notify: awtss - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtss.dll
    • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
    • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
    • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HijackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

    MFD,

Thanks for the help. When Active Scan found stuff, I wondered why if I am wasting my money on Zone Alarm, ISP Email Virus Protection, and a-squared: and if AVG, Sypwear Blaster, Spybot, and Stinger, plus a few other "profession" scans didn't pick these thing up what hope does a person have of keeping thier computer safe?

    Here are the results:

Fix these with HJT – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

    O2 - BHO: ATLDistrib Object - {93C6313C-9DB4-4694-8BD0-E378C573A9AD} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtss.dll (file missing)

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: awtss - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtss.dll (file missing)

    DownLoad http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtsp.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mllml.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhi.dll

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

    START – RUN – type in %temp% OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete

Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp

    Empty the recycle bin
Boot and post a new log from normal NOT safe mode

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

When MIke has finished cleaning you Vundo normally gets installed via a security hole in Sun Java so do this please

go to www.java.com & download the latest version of java 1.5.0.6

install it & then go to add/remove programs and UNINSTALL ALL previous versions of sun java

    Yes they do

    I'm going blind missing that

    Thanks Mike

Make sure you go to add/remove programs ands uniunstall all versions of Sun JAva taht are before 1.5.0.6

when you install it doesn't uninstall the old vunerable versions so they can still be used to attack you

    Latest log as follows:-

When I did as instructed (yes I do RTFM;) ) with the Killbox, none of those files showed up as being there.

Also, when I typed the run command, it took me to a folder in my Documents and setting; so I navigated to the C:\Windows|Temp folder and nuked the files inside. Hope that was the right thing to do.
