My XP Professional Media Computer is getting slower and slower booting up. It takes at least 4 minutes to fully load and connect to the dsl internet. My hard drive is 144GB and I have only used 20 GB's. I have run Spy-Bot, Ad-Aware, cc cleaner defragged and up to date virus software. I am wondering if I have to much in startup. I am attaching a file, if anyone can tell me what I can uncheck I would appreciate it.

 Thanks

Please click here to download and install version 2.0.2 of the HijackThis Installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

You can unckeck the following items from msconfig > Startup:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SigmatelSysTrayApp] stsystra.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IAAnotif] C:\Program Files\Intel\Intel Matrix Storage Manager\Iaanotif.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DLA] C:\WINDOWS\System32\DLA\DLACTRLW.EXE

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\ISUSPM.exe -startup

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [CallAssistant] C:\Program Files\Verizon\CallAssistant\vzCallAssistant.exe

O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?

After rebooting, when the small System Configuration Utility window appears, ignore the message. Put a check mark in that window, then click OK.

Let's see what's installed in that computer.

Start HijackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

Ok I unchecked the ones Phantom told me too, did a restart that took the same 4 minutes for my DSL to connect online, opened msconfig again and NvCplDaemon and call assistant had a check in the space again. I unchecked them again but have not done a second restart. Here is the flavellee asked for.

Ok I unchecked the ones Phantom told me too, did a restart that took the same 4 minutes for my DSL to connect online, opened msconfig again and NvCplDaemon and call assistant had a check in the space again. I unchecked them again but have not done a second restart.
Go back into Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - Startup(tab), uncheck NvCplDaemon, then click Apply - OK - Exit With Restart.

Go into Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK, expand the window so you can see the list, double-click on NVIDIA Display Driver Service, change its "startup type" from Automatic to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

After you restart your computer, NvCplDaemon should still be unchecked.

uninstall these programs because they're not needed or are outdated:

Acrobat.com

Adobe AIR

Apple Software Update

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6

Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Microsoft Picture It! 99
(Unless you actually use this very outdated version)

Microsoft Plus! Digital Media Edition Installer

Microsoft Plus! Photo Story 2 LE

Shockwave
(This is a very old version of Macromedia and isn't the newer Adobe version)

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2.20

SpywareBlaster 4.1

SpywareGuard v2.2

TweakUI

If you're prompted to restart your computer to complete the uninstall of any of them, do so.

After they've all been uninstalled, restart your computer one last time.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Download and save these programs:

Java(TM) 6 Update 20

(This will overwrite and replace Java(TM) 6 Update 18 that's currently installed)

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.45

(This will replace the 3 antispyware programs that you uninstalled and will compliment SUPERAntiSpyware that you currently have installed. It does a better job and is user-friendly)

Close all open windows first, then install them.

After they've been installed, restart your computer.

------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going to leave you with Phantom010 from this point on.

For flavorlee first...I removed the programs you suggested and downloaded and installed the 2 new ones. After removing Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard there were folders left behind.blaster has .sss files and did not know whether they could be deleted or not. Spyware Guard had dll and some other files in it. Is it safe to delete both of these folders?

phantom... as I said before I did not restart after unchecking NvCplDaemon, but I did a restart after removing the programs flavorlee wanted me too and both NvCplDaemon, and call assistant were still unchecked so I did not go any furthur with what you said to do. All of these changes has not sped up the rebooting and connecting to my dsl. It takes about 90 seconds for welcome window to appear and the desktop with icons is there 2 minutes before the welcome media file is heard. Then another 2 minutes for the dsl to connect. I am wondering if there could be a problem with the modem. What do you think?
I really do appreciate all the help you "techs" give to me and others. Would have given up on computers ages ago if I didn't have you to turn to for help. Thank you so ever much.

Once you've uninstalled SpyBlaster and SpywareGuard and have restarted your computer, it's safe to delete their leftover folders from inside the C:\Program Files folder.

Phantom010 is working with you on the startup load, so I'll leave that to him.

Other than your antivirus, firewall and Internet connectivity service, the Startup Type on most of your non-Microsoft Services (from programs YOU have installed), can be changed from Automatic to Manual. This will reduce the amount of processes running in the background and speed up your computer.

Please download and run Autoruns.

Click on Options.

Put a check mark on Hide Microsoft and Windows Entries.

Hit the F5 key to refresh your page.

Select the Services tab.

Only non-Microsoft services will be showing.

Right-click on any service.

Click on Jump to...

You will now be at the exact registry key for that service.

In the right-hand pane, look at the DWORD Start.

The last number at the end of the entry will be either:

(0) for Boot.

(1) for System.

(2) for Automatic.

(3) for Manual.

(4) for Disabled.

If you want to change the value, double-click on Start and change the number accordingly.

Finally things are working "normal" Booting is down to 2 minutes including dsl connection. Changing settings to manual on those things must have been the remedy. I am deeply indebted to both of you, flavorlee and phantom 1010, thanks again. I will now mark this solved.:)
