{SOLVED} What is WPS file format?

Hi -

Recently i placed a help wanted ad in the local paper, including my e-mail address. Since then i have received numerous file attachements with the extension WPS. What program is this? I finally got my MS Word 2000 to open the files after playing around with it, but I'm still curious about what program this is.

I thought most of the resumes would be in MS Word format (.doc), but of the 18 or so i received, only two were Word and the rest were .wps.

tomlunt, Some one will correct if I am wrong but I believe that is the file extension for Word Perfect.

WPS is a Microsoft Works file extension.

Microsoft's recommendation for converting these files to M/S Word is to save them in some other format to begin with, .RTF or .DOC for instance.

I know this doesn't help much after the fact.

See, I told you so! Some one did correct me when I was wrong! Sorry, I thought Works used the .WKS extension.

 

Talismanic is also right.
Further looking shows that MS Works DOES use the .WKS extension. One is for word processing files and the other for spreadsheets.
Bill Gates has thrown us into total confusion again.

Thanks to everyone that replied. I kind of thought it might be MS Works, but my MS Works (at home) came with Microsoft Word for the word processor, thus the confusion.
