just performed a fresh reinstall on toshiba satellite c665 with windows7, all seemed smooth, however it will not even check for updates.. I go to windows update and it says "windows update cannot check for updates because service is not running, you may need to restart your computer".. So I made sure all update services / module were started, and even tried the "fix it update program" still same error.. Any suggestions?? This never happened to me before.. I'm stuck.. Thanks in advance!!!

    Try this BEFORE anything else!

    Open Windows Updates
    click on Change Settings
change your option to Never Update.
    Click Apply
    Close Windows Updates

    Now open Windows Updates again
    Click on Change Settings
Change the settings to your preference.
Click Apply, and close Windows Update

Now open Windows Updates, and Check for Updates

    See what happens.

Or else try below step :-
    Look for c:\windows\softwaredistribution\datastore\logs\edb.log

and delete the file and reboot the system

Did you use the original Toshiba media? Can you get on the internet? Do you have any problems in Device Manager? Were there any errors or problems during installation?

@hsonline No luck, thanks for the effort.. I tried your tips in exact order you preferred, Thanks Again.. @Elvandil I had to replace the HDD for this, and I didn't have discs, (I'm not sure Toshiba supplies discs all the time), so i had to go to RESTOREDISC.COM and order them, where they have a pretty thorough make, model, and OS choice list.. . And I have actually had to order 2 sets for Toshiba from them before, and all went perfect on those Installs..

Last try : If you have windows defender.

To rectify the issue you simply update windows defender and then try installing updated for windows.

Ok, it will not let me update Windows Defender, because the Service for Windows Defender cannot start due to error: "0x8e5e0247" ?
