Go to Add/Remove programs and see if you've installed Security Patch Q329170. You should also check your event log and see if you are getting an error about unloading profiles, I forget the exact event number. If both of these are true, uninstall Q329170, ignore the dire warning about all your programs ceasing to run, and your shutdown should be normal again. :)

Once again, thank you Bill for another buggy patch!

I don't have that in my add remove panel. I have win 2000 sp3, and I still can't find the problem. Maybe someone else can help?

    Hiya

Go to Run and type MSCONFIG, startup tab. Uncheck the following:

dla: Drive letter access to HP's and Veritas' version of DirectCD. Does the same thing as DirectCD. You'll need to start this before inserting a suitably formatted CD

    Apply and restart.

If you don't have MSCONFIG installed, as by default Win2000 doesn't come with it, get it from here:

    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

    Also, try this general cleanup:

Go to Tools | Internet Options. General tab. Under Delete Files, delete offline content

Advanced tab, under Browsing, look for Enable Insta on Demand. Untick.
Under Security, look for Empty Tempory Internet... Tick.
    Apply and OK

Also, go here and download Spybot:

    http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT/

    Regards

I have been experiencing the same issues for the past couple of weeks now - shut down of my windows 2000 box took 2 minutes, sometimes more. I even re-formatted my PC thinking that something was corrupt.

Well....it turns out that I have the Q329170 update installed. I removed it, rebooted my PC and shutdown times are now a respectable 17 seconds.

    thanks
