Using Windows XP, I can't click (double-click) on my recycle bin and get it to open. If I right click on it, it works fine. All the files are there, etc.

I have tried deleting the recycle bin in cmd (rd \s recycler) and c:\recycler\attrib -s -h recycler), which did not work. I have tried downloading hotfixes, but it still doesn't work. I even created a new shortcut, but am getting the same message.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I forgot to mention the message I get when I click on it. It says that there is not a file associated with the recycle bin and that I need to establish one in the folder options. Am I wrong, or is there not supposed to be an actual file association for the recycle bin?

    Thanks again

Hi and welcome. I think this probably has something to do with your Norton problem, as Norton has a protected recycle bin.

I'm assuming that, too, but what can I do about it besides reinstalling Win XP? I've tried a using the XP disc to fix the problem, but that didn't work either for some reason.

A reinstall would definitely fix it, but you'd have to reinstall other programs as well, so depending on which avenue you want to take. I replied to your other thread too.

I will try that, but could you explain to me what it would be doing? Is it just resetting the registry values?

    Thanks

Just in case NAV left their entry in the right-click context menu when you right-click on the Recycle Bin...and assuming you don't want it there...I know it bugged me to know end...someone made me this reg file to get rid of it.

Also, I noticed sometime back that Windows Washer tends to do a good job of corrupting the Recycle Bin...at least it did for me, and every system is different.

Export the entire 645FF040 entry before you apply the tweak..just in case.

Well, the recyclerrepair.reg file didn't work, but it looks like I finally got Norton's to work right, and that seems to have done the trick. The recycle bin and Norton's recycle bin were interlinked, and one wouldn't work without the other. As soon as I finally got the NISP to download correctly, it reset the recycle bin. What a pain and a hassle, but at least it's all working again.

Thank you to everyone for your help.
