Hi, Should my physical memory and cpu add up to 100% ?? (or close)
Task Manager shows such figures as cpu 13%.....physical memory 42%.

My setup is not particularly slow but frequently takes for ever to close down.
I show below some specs and would welcome your thoughts and advice.

Should my apples and oranges add up to 100%? I think I'm not understanding what you are really asking. :)

And your point? Sitting here idling and reading your post my (64-bit machine) is showing similar CPU usage and about 1/2 the RAM percentage (but a similar total since I have 6 GB).

How long is that in minutes? Do you first close out of most applications (browser, email client, etc.) or let the shutdown process force closure? And, you're not talking about those times when it's installing or doing other fiddling with updates, right?

By your number of posts and your answers to my questions, one of us obviously does not know that he is trying to compare or add apples and oranges; guess who!!!
I thought if cpu showed a figure physical memory should show the difference with both adding to 100%, I gather that I am totally wrong in my thoughts.
But with your knowledge perhaps you can direct me to some sort of reading or web link to explain matters and show why particularly my memory is showing low.
If not I will simply google the question again (it was doing that, that brought me back to your forum)

I'll try to be a little less dense. The CPU % is showing how much of the total capacity of your Central Processor Unit is being used. It should be low when you are doing little, and you have a powerful machine there, so most of the time you shouldn't find it approaching 100%. When you do, you start experiencing sluggishness.

Similarly the physical memory % is showing how much of your 3 GB RAM is currently in use. Windows 7 does a pretty good job of using memory but not wasting it, so much of the time you will probably see it in that range. The time to get a little concerned is when it approaches 100% of memory, 'cause that's when swapping to virtual memory begins, and that slows your performance.

The RAM is very fast memory (much faster read/write access than the hard drive) where computer instructions and data are kept for fast processing. The CPU is the "machine" that executes the instructions (that, hopefully it can get from RAM and not have to go to the hard drive) to accomplish whatever you want done. They are "apples and oranges"--related, but way different. :)

I like your style; especially about 'i'll try to be a little less dense' I think that's my job and thank you for the explanation.
To avoid me seeming so very dense, the vista OS machine before this setup, when I very infrequently looked at the figures my physical memory was always much higher AND I thought that was good because (I again thought) it showed how much memory I had left to use !!!
With your explanation I believe I have no problems with this setup as long as I keep the number of services or running programmes to a reasonable level.
    Again thank you.

You have good processing performance and sufficient memory for almost everything (except for, say, serious video editing) so I think you have little to worry about. Vista does not manage memory nearly as well as Windows 7 does.

You can mark this solved using the [IMG] button at the upper left of the page.
