    I am somewhat of a Windows n00b.

I had two related problems one was a ton of trojans that were making it behave poorly.
    That's been solved.
The next related issue is Windows 2000 at some point decided that it did not want to shutdown or reboot. What I meen is that when I tell it to shutdown is after I get through the part about : "Windows 2000 shutting down..." then after that goes away I am left with a black screen.
One of the experts (Mfdnsc) has looked at my Hijack This logs and seems to think their cleen (please let me know if I'm wrong.).
    What's the next step? :/

Well we would be glad to look at the HJT log file but there is one problem with that.

There is no HJT Log file. Please post it for one of our experts to look at?

    Have a good day.

recently this happened to me...you go to start, run , type msconfig, and check selective startup..this should reboot your computer...as its rebooting...watch to see what you have to hit to go into the main boot menu..on mine it was f8..then when you do that...go to last known good configuration...this should get it to at least shut down normally for ya...then see what they say here...im not an expert...but this did happen to me and this is what i had to do..i hope it helps:)

    Hi ya egad.

There is a standard fix for this problem in Windows XP.
I had the same problem when I upgraded to XP Pro
It's possible that the same fix will work with Win2000

    Try this...

Right-click on the My Computer icon, click "Properties / Hardware / Device Manager". In the tool bar at the top click "View" then check the box labeled “Show Hidden Devices.” If it’s available on your computer.. there will be a red X on the APM/NT Legacy Node. Try enabling it and see if this resolves the powerdown problem.

Reboot... then see if a full shutdown will now happen.

Let us know how it goes. :)

I don't think this should make a difference- theirs a PCI device (modem I think) that has always been a source of headaches (it has the yellow "!" mark-I typically have to disable it because my ethernet card uses the same IRQ range it wants)

found APM NT Legacy mode. It looks like for some reason something was having problems so it got uninstalled. When I reinstalled it their's some sort of conflict with it...lame.

I don't know how on earth to get the 'NT Legacy APM' to-or at least stay working. I had it load once now it doesn't want to do it again. I guess at this point my question is: Is it worth working out what on earth is wrong with 2k-or might it be worth while considering XP or doing a clean install of 2k?

Since you initially stated that you had a "ton of trojans" personally, I wouldn't chase this problem. I would save all my personal files to removable media and since you apparently have a reinstallation/recovery disk(s) I would go to the hard drive manufacturers site and download their low level format (zero fill) utility and zero fill the drive which will write zeros to all sectors of the drive.

After the drive is "wiped", boot the machine from the Windows reinstallation disk. Windows should find the drive as "new-unformatted". At that point you can format the drive and make any partions you need if you are going to have more than a single partition on the drive. About a third of the way through the installation you will get an onscreen prompt to "press enter to boot from the CD". At this prompt, DO NOT press enter, just wait a few seconds and the machine should reboot itself.

Prior to wiping the drive, access your BIOS and set the boot sequence to 1st floppy drive, 2nd CD-ROM and 3rd hard drive. If you don't have a floppy drive, set the boot sequence to 1st CD-ROM and 2nd Hard Drive.

I've been running Win2kPro since it was released and I zero fill the drive and reload everything about every 18-24 months and never really have any problems with the system.

I did indeed have quite a few trojans- I was walked through how to clean them up to at least get it so the darn computer would let me back up my stuff. :)
I realise this is quickly getting off topic-

I like your' plan and agree that for me since it in a place where i can back up whatever I need to.

    The next issue is this
I have both a XP and Win 2k---is their any particular advantage to one over the other?
Is it worth while setting up a restore partion?
