Hi guys, you've always come through previously, I'm hoping you can help this time too please.

My friend and I bought Acer Aspire 5741's about 9 months ago and neither of us has had any problems until now. My friend went to connect to the internet via wireless router yesterday to find that there was limited connectivity (no internet access). We assumed it was a router issue and I gave her a number of things to check but all seemed ok with it. I went to her house to look at it today and when I ran the connection troubleshooter got "windows can't communicate with.......... (DNS server)". I connected my laptop via her router and everything was fine. I brought her laptop back to my house and tried to connect to the internet via my router and got exactly the same 'DNS' message - my laptop again connected without any problem.

I have re-booted the routers, laptops, network adapters etc and also checked the wireless adapter settings on both laptops, which appear to be the same. I have re-set the TCP/IP stack and have also tried ipconfig /release and /renew - none of which seems to have made any difference. The results of ipconfig/all are:-

As an update, I've also hard wired the laptop but it's made no difference. I've also manually changed the DNS server details - the 'defective' laptop still won't connect but the other one connects immediately

There is communication with the router, but then no internet access. That usually means no other computer can get internet access through the same router. Perhaps a mis-configured or corrupted non-Windows firewall could cause this (if the router is OK).

Please show an ipconfig /all for the PC that does have internet access.

The ipconfig /all shown below is the laptop that works on both mine and my friends router. I did try the non-connecting laptop with firewall/AV disabled but didn't make any difference:

What firewall or security suite is on Debbie-PC? Does it get internet access with an ethernet connection?

It's Webroot (that came with the laptop). I tried to connect with an ethernet cable but got the same result (no internet access)

Thank you sooooo much. Have uninstalled Webroot and then cleaned up with the removal tool. hey presto, immediate internet access. I won't bother to re-install Webroot but will use Comodo instead, which I have on my own laptop. Again, thank you so very much.

You're welcome. :)

By the way, when Comodo gets corrupted you'll need to do the same dance with it. :) They all get corrupted eventually.
