Hi, lately I have been having a problem with my OS. I recently just reformatted my hard drive, because of the problem I am having, just to have it come back on me.

The problem I am having is with my Windows Explorer and Dr Watson PostMortem Debugger. Every 20-30 minutes, I will get the messages (2 of them) for, "Windows Explorer has encountered an error and must close", and, "Dr Watson PostMortem Debugger has encountered an error and must close".

Again, this is the reason I reformatted in the first place. I know it's not a virus doing this (At least, I hope it's not, as I just reformatted).

If anyone can help, or tell me what it is that is causing it, it would be very much appreciated.

Did you completely format and re-install? Or just a repair install? If the former, then it could be a bad install disk, or yes, you could have a virus again...depending where u have been on the net. If it was a repair install, then I would suggest re-doing everything.

    Scorp.

Yeah, it was a complete reinstall, but I don't think that the disk is the culprit.

I did however, after installing some things, like the Windows updates, instead of immediately restarting, I continued on my way, just to be more efficient. Could that have done it?

If so, would repairing Windows help?

    Thanks for the help.

I recently installed SP-2 on Windows XP on a Dell Dimension desktop.
First time I used computer after installation, okay. All I did that first time was to go into Control Computer to verify in add/remove programs that it was installed. Okay.
Second time I got on after installation, I got a pop-up screen: Dr. Watson Post Mortem Debugger. Then it says it is encountering problems and asks me to send error report, or not. Whether I do send error report or not, the problem is the same: the computer hangs.
I queried MS tech on this. The technician suspected more than one program running and conflicting. He suggested various steps, all of which require me to hit the Start icon, then Run. I can get to that screen but cannot enter commands because the computer is hanging and will not let me do anything. The tech fellow doesn't seem to understand that.
I have done a clean boot several times, booted in Safe Mode and other options from the boot menu. With each option, Windows XP loads but before I can enter any commands, the Dr. Watson pop-up reappears and the hijacking starts all over again.
My data is backed up. I am wondering whether I should just re-install all my desks, as I have run out of options. Repeat: I cannot enter commands so can do nothing on screen to fix the problem.
I am not a computer whiz, but knowledgable enough to follow simple directions.

    windows explorer is the problem...
stumped me for a while... all the other solutions i googled were rubbish

what you need to do is make things easier for windows explorer

open up any windows explorer window and change the following settings

    change the view to list

    then click tools... folder options
in general tab click use windows classic folders
view tab unclick all the display ones... can leave the adress bar

now click apply to all folders

    problem should now be solved

Wow... This is a REALLY old post... Franky, I would recommend starting your own thread as you are more likely to get noticed than by posting in a thread marked "Solved".
