Hi. First let me say that I do have working internet access. I use Firefox and works fine. My kid plays games and I play my Xbox 360 live at the same time. I currently do not have any virus softare running outside of the default XP firewall and updated Windows Defender program...with that said...

I cant connect using my Internet Explorer. When I open it it just times out and I get that blank "check you connection, check your address" message page. And this happened before i installed the newsest version of IE.

Also, I cant now connect with my Windows Messenger service, it trys to login then I get an connection error message there to, something like "check name, account" I think there was also something about a proxy server? Dont recal.

And, when I use firefox and go to www.gamespot.com...when I click on the videos to watch, i see in the WMP applicatin that its shows connecting...then buffering...then nothing...just goes blank and does not play...never used to do this before.

So please help...What is going on here? Why is this impacting only my WIndows internet type applications. I can play videos in other sites, just not gamespot.com... I cant launch my browser and connect, i cant launch the messanger since now i upgraded to the new one, and that one is integrated I think with IE...so there both dead.

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Hi and welcome. Not sure you posted to the correct forum, but, since you say you have no virus program, have you tried an online virus scan?

You're living very dangerously without a virus program.

go to here and download 'Hijack This!' self installer. Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu and an optional shortcut on desktop.
Click on the entry in start menu or on the desktop to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

by posting a HJT log file here. you are letting some of the best people help you to make sure your system is clean. you will not get in trouble for posting it. yes, alot of them are large. but that is what these people deal with on a daily basis. the sooner you post it, the better off you will be.

and like acacandy said. get some type of virus check done or else you will find yourself in that position. ie: "tons of spyware"'.

open IE/tools/options/connections/ select your connection & unselect use a proxy server

then

Run hijackthis, put a tick in the box beside these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 209.134.26.21:9870
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe, msmsgs.exe

reboot & see if it works

I stronlgy advise either reinstalling your mcafee or if you don't like it tehn uninstall it fully & install another antivirus

Ok Great!

Finally feel like I'm on a path that might work, I'll do this when I get home...Ohh, and I thought I did go down the proxy uncheck route at first cause of the error message i got, to no avail...but well double check and do what you said...in the meantime...

I've been trying for about 1 year to uninstall my Mcafee software...I've spoken to them, used the add/remove, deleted files per the help desk at mcafee...I can't seem to remove this thing...

How can I get this software completely out of my pc?

Also, I don't have that Norton/Symantec either now? I'd like to get all this stuff off...I'm going to use that Microsoft OneCare I think...try that.

I liked NOrton really, and may get it again...just my subscription ran out...anyway...

Whhoooo Hoooo!!! Sort of...

Ok so i started down this road and although i didnt eactly get to the Hijack this step. When I got to the tools/internet connections...i saw there want one in the list...so I just added one, then went under settings for the lan and removed the Proxy server setting...closed and...well...Explorer and the MSN messenger work now Yeah!!!! Thanks for the direction....

But ...

I went to install my Microsoft OneCare from Microsoft, and it does a scan to see if my pc has any type virus or firewall in its way...and guess what...That stupid Mcafee is picked up. So im stuck.

So thats where I am. I cant use the add/remove cuase i did that. Mcafee wants 2.99 per minute to talk with me to just to see if the can help.

WHat do i do next? HOw i get that Mcafee off my pc and what should i do from here?

THe Explorere issue is fixed, and thanks for the assistance. But now I'm still not done. DO I repost in another forum? Or keep with this string?

Either way, im going to the Mcafee website to see if there is anything there to help me remove.

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Folders to delete:
C:\Program Files\mcafee.com

Drivers to unload:
McShield
mcupdmgr.exe
MCVSRte

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply.

when it reboots run HJt & fix
